AC in and out

Lately my ac has been fluctuating alot. It will blow cold air for a while then it will start blowing less air and it will be warm and musty. Then all of a sudden cold again. When its cold its cold. no excessive condensation dripping on ground. I fear my compressor is going out.

Have you already checked the air gap, and ensured that when it is not blowing cold that the clutch is engaged? In case you have not check it out.

I bet and hope thats all it is. Simple check only takes a few minutes. Another few minutes to remove the shim.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Just went out and looked at the gap, without using a feeler gauge the gap appears to be between .040/.050 closer to .040. I know it's just an eyeball measurement but I am accustomed to working with metal in those thicknesses and I'm pretty confident with my estiment. I will check with a feeler gauge tomorrow an bring home tools to work on it, may even do it on my lunch break. By the way, the link you gave me was awesome. Thanks.

Just measured the gap, it's .043 and the clutch didn't engage until I put a finger against it. I will be adjusting the gap when I get home. Thanks Alan and Marv.

No problem, glad to help. If yours is like mine, there was only one "shim" when I removed it, it left my gap at 18, been that way 3 years!

POP...you da man. Just did mine, not 5 minutes ago, after finding this thread. Mine measured .048 , removed the only shim, filed it down, but think i'll stop and order the kit from autozone, cuz my filing didnt look good, have some high/low spots in it, but all measured close to the .025....thanks again.

Just went and fixed mine. One shim, approx .038, sanded it to approx .024. Engages every time when not running and sits idle when ac not selected. Same while running. Looks like another fix thanks to FTE. One ? though, do you units blow more air on max ac or normal ac? Mine blows more on normal.

Check for a plastic baggie sucked up into the intake duct above the passenger's foot well. That'll cause it.

Yes.

In "normal" mode, the air comes in from outside.

In "MAX", the air is recirculated from the inside through that port, which is the only way for air to get into the box in that mode.

Semi-common problem, and you wouldn't be the first who came back and said, "Whooda' thunkit?".
