Need some help on this one. I have a 2000 f250 super duty crew with a 7.3 in it. Recently, had some shifting issues from 2nd to 3rd. If I was on the accelerator, hit 3rd HARD. Today, lost all gears, including reverse. Checked underneath and nothing is turning which steers me away from driveshaft, universals or yoke. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Tow truck driver says had a similar problem and had to replace shift solenoid(s) and harness. Before I start throwing money out the window, need to see if anyone can steer me in the right direction. Thanks
It's not anything electronic. Something mechanical broke. If it is a 4x4 it could be the transfer case or the transmission, if it is not a 4x4 it is something inside the transmission.
If it is a 4x4 will it hold or roll when in park? If it rolls in park the transfer case broke. If it holds in park it's the transmission. For a 4x2 it's going to hold in park no matter what broke inside the transmission.
It's a 4x2 and holds in park. Just dropped the pan and the fluid was clean with a little bit of metal dust on the magnet in the pan. Was hoping that I'd find chunks in there just so I'd know what the problem was. The more I read on this, it's pointing to hydraulic (torque converter, pump, etc.). Just lookin for a direction to go as I don't know alot about trannies. Thanks for your help.
my dads 2000 just did the same thing it was the three banjo bolts above the valve bodies and seperator plate. took me an hour to pull it out retorque the bolts and install everthing again.
they are the green lined bolts called feed bolts. all three of my dads were all the way out laying ontop of the seperator plate, put red threadlock on them and torque to 14ftlbs, also his seperator gaskets were so brittle they crumbled when i took it out, went to a local trans shop and bought a new set for 10 dollars. torque all valve body bolts to 8-9 ftbls and your be good to go
Thanks SuperDutyScaler. I'm willing to try anything at this point short of takin' out a 2nd mortgage to take to a tranny shop. Ive never gone so far as to take the valve body out of the tranny - what's in store for me? Anything that I need to be aware of before I jump in head first? Thanks again
its actually quite easy, drain the fluid, drop the pan, remove filter be careful allot of oil will come out, remove accumulator valve body put into a container, remove solenoid pack plug is easy to remove from the pack, then remove the big L shaped body but keep the small one attached to it there is check ***** in there and i dont have a pic to show you where they go. drop seperator plate be careful not to rip the gaskets or loose the check *****, then just remove one feed bolt at atime spray with brake clean and add red threadlock and reinstall.
yea i hate auto trannies, my first truck was a 1997 F-250 heavy duty i bought it in 2003 with 33k on it all original. thistruck was a creampuff a oldman in his 70's bought it newandplowed hisdriveway and his three daughters driveways with it. five months after i bought it i used it for two days plowing that winter and the tranny just blew apart. my 1978 mud/hunting truck blew the C6 a week after buying it and now reverse is going again. my F-350 in my sigis starting to go i think just hit 90k on my babied truck full flush ever 20k and the truck i believe is getting avery slight slip in first when it shifts into second. but dropping thepan showns no sign of clutch material. if i had the money i would go buy a used 6speed and bolt itin but what you gonna do...
Hey SuperDutyScaler! Thanks a ton for all the info and pics. Tremendous help. I took it down and got the separator plate off. Thanks for the pics of where the check ***** go cuz if i didnt have that i'd have been in a bad spot. The three feed bolts weren't quite as loose as your dad's but they definitely weren't torqued. Came off with no resistance. Could these bolts not being torqued be the culprit and cause the tranny failure or do I need to look at something else while i have it this far down? Thanks again for all your help. Spooneyj
from what i understand they feed pressure to the clutches, if they are loose fluid will pass through the threads causing low or now pressure. which causes no forward movement. all i did was put new red threadlock on them torqued to 14ftlbs and put everything back and the truck moved and drove better than before. it now holds gear longer and shifts so much firmer and faster
Well, no luck on that one. Even out of desperation I disconnected the batteries to see if I could clear out some hidden code. Nada. Truck still has park but no forward or reverse gears. Since I know more about Brazilian tree monkeys than I do transmissions, anymore help or another direction would be greatly appreciated. Workin on a 1/2 shoestring budget so I can't just have it towed to a shop to get it fixed so I have to rely on my mechanical ability (scary) to get betsy rollin' again. SuperDutyScaler - Thank you tons for the help and advice and everything else - was really hopin' that would've been the problem! If nothing else, I've learned quite a bit about the bottom side of a tranny!
