Works fine part of the time other times it will only take off forward at about 1500 rpm but reverse always engages good warm or cold . When it hit 15 to 1800 rpm it will take off and no slipping at any gear change . I drove it the other day to get codes up but it never missed a lick. Does any one know what could be wrong ? It has new filter and fluid and double check filter it is in place correctly .
It is a 1996 F350 Centurion 4 door stretch 320,000 miles this is third trans with about 20,000 miles I got stuck in mud but did not give it a hard time I went and got tractor and pulled it out and this problem started . I cleaned wire hook UPS on both sides of trans but did not help . Pulled pan but there was not any metal or clutch fibers in it . Put in new filter and fluid but it didn't help . I have rebuild several old autos of my own one in my sons 750 HP show show truck but never worked electronic trans before .
Mark Kovalsky is the guy you need to talk to. He is a former Ford auto transmission engineer who knows his stuff when it comes to matters like these. I will see if I can get him to head over here and offer an opinion.
I sent him a PM. I know he is a busy guy, so hopefully he will be around. My WAG is that there is a band that is slipping to engage first gear.
Another thing that comes to mind is that the transmission linkage may be out of adjustment. Does it engage first if you pull the shifter down into 1? Does it shift into all four gears when you are driving it? It doesn't seem like you're starting off in second gear does it?
Pull it to 1st it doesn't engage any better but in drive when it gets to 1500 to 1800 it takes off and shifts normal does not slip in any gear . One 74 yr old mechanic friend thinks it is torque convertor or selenoid bad . Haven't got it bring up any codes yet . It was working fine one minute and then it isn't . Like I say I sunk it to the frame in soft ground in 4 wheel drive I pulled forward and backed up a couple times I wasn't hard on it I knew that it wasn't coming out so went got the 4 wheel drive Ford tractor and pulled it out and then it started acting up . Like I say I didn't crowd it I am 62 years old I got a farm here I had been back there several times before but that day I got about 25 yrds from stock pond and it went down .
Have you by chance checked the electrical connector on the side of the transmission? Is there any chance that the truck was up in the mud far enough to jar that connector? It may be worth pulling the connector off, and inspecting it, cleaning it up good, and reinstalling it.
Yes that was the first thing I done but I think I will clean them again just in case I missed something. I used brake parts cleaner and let them dry and then sealed them with silicone electrical grease . yea the front went down to the cross member rear almost to punken . This thing is super heavy it didn't spin down it just sunk but I was spinning while tractor was pulling me out with all four wheels in reverse witch was back the direction I came from . Then I pulled up farm gravel road about 50' took it out of 4 wheel drive and with in a 100' or so it was messing up .
