i need some advice

hey yall i have a 93 f150 with a 300 in it im having an issue with her that i cant seem to figure out maybe someone can help. the truck has high miles and its taken to burning oil, but the burnt oil is blowing out of the breather on the valve cover. i thought the pcv valve was clogged so i changed that and it didnt help. ive been told that the rings are possibly bad and the oil is blowing by them? would that cause the burnt oil to come out of the air breather? any help is greatly appreciated!

Worn rings, compression blowing into crankcase causing excess pressure and oil coming out of breather vent. That would also be why you are burning oil. I may be wrong but that would be my guess.

A compression check will probably answer this.

If you know what you are doing, run the check and squirt maybe a table spoon of oil into a suspect cylinder and run the compression check again. If the compression goes up, it's the rings. If it doesn't, it's the valve guide/seals or maybe a dead head gasket or piston. Any one of these can cause pressure in the crankcase and burning oil.

If you don't know how to do a compression check just ask, I think half the guys on this site can tell you. It is simple to do and will tell you a lot about your engine.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Sounds good to me.

I was taught a tablespoon of transmission fluid into the spark plug hole.. But im sure either would work. And that is definitely a great way to check if it is the rings or another problem. The oil will help to (momentarily) seal the ring/cylinder surface and bump up compression if that is the problem.
