how much pressure?

when doing a boost leak check how much pressure should you be able to build in the system during the test (if there are no leaks)?

How are you producing pressure? If your using the engine, it wont make any while in park. I have boost leak detectors that I make and you use a compressor to pump in air.

If you are using a compressor, the air you put in should equal the pressure you see on your boost gauge if you have no leaks. You theoretically can go up to 30psi but there is no real point. When I do the test I put in 10 psi. It is a safe pressure, and will expose any leaks with out the danger of something breaking or blowing off while I am elbow deep in my engine.

i have a small pancake compressor....hooked directly in to the turbo inlet. i set the regulator on the compressor to 20 psi but can only get about 8lbs on my boost gauge.

Then you have a large boost leak. Lower the pressure to 10psi and start poking around. The common place is the boots. You should be able to hear them, but feel around with your hand you will feel the air rushing out.

Also, check your AIH plug (if equipped) and around the turbo. Also, the up pipes behind the turbo. If the up pipes are leaking you will see soot on the firewall.

I've tested mine and it's all sealed up but, it takes quite a bit of air for ot to actually pressure up and it's not going to hold pressure. It will leak through the valves and eventually out the exaust. And just a word of advice, I wouldn't go above 15-20 lbs. If your tester slips out, it will be a rocket and possibly cause casualties! Yea ask me how I know!!

Agreed. I only go to 10psi until I think I have all the leaks sealed up then I go to 15 just to check.

I had mine shoot out a few times too. But that was when I was designing the detector.

So how high were you able to get it?

I can't hear our feel any leaks from the boots our turbo area....I haven't tried the soap yet on the plenums.

I can hear/feel air escaping from the ccv and the oil fill tube

I think you have a leak Trey. The gauge is on ZERO.

From another thread: Do you have the part numbers for the '05 front bumper brackets?

I believe you should disconnect and plug your CCV on the air intake side......your losing pressure in to the crankcase.

edit: Never mind, I see you have it disconnected in the photo.

great video bulla!!!

mine wont go anywhere near that....like i said....about 8lbs max and thats with me sticking my finger in the ccv tube hole. when i remove my thumb you can hear the air release. same thing with the oil fill tube....remove cap and you can hear the air escaping.

i have flipped the oil cap over and it stays on and doesnt seem to have any excesive blowby.

what could be my issue?
