Same thing here with my '03. I got 3 or 4 little tiny rust spots on the front bumper and the rear one is starting to tarnish in places. Also the frame parts visible in the wheelwells have some rust spots showing. I'm not worried about it but it makes me wonder how this truck will look in 4 or 5 years!
I know we had a harsh winter here but I've never had a vehicle start to rust so fast. Only owned it for about 6 months. I think I'll use flat black primer on the frame parts I can see in the wheelwells and just wait until the f'ing chrome bumpers rust out and buy heavy-duty aftermarket ones like those ones Luverne makes. They're not pretty but they'll last.
There was a thread on this not too long ago, and turns out most of it was due to rail dust. It comes from when these vehicles are on the trains, tiny pieces of metal fly up from the tracks and/or wheels of the train car and they will get embedded in the paint/chrome type things and look like rust spots. I think the solution was to get a chemical wash and then wax it or something, and if I remember correctly, warranty covers it. Check in some of the older threads here and you might find it. If any body knows more about the rail dust/warranty coverage issue please refresh my memory (I know I don't have to worry about warranty, it's been gone on my truck for almost 5 years now, but I want to help these folks with their new trucks).
down here in san antonio, tx i have a 02 with zero rust on bumpers frame whatever. the only spot w/ rust are the dif covers...but that is normal anyways. Maybe i like our winters after all
