Hello everyone, I am having an issue that i can't pinpoint on my dads truck.
It is a 1995 Ford F-150, 5.0l V8 Automatic
Now, the a mechanic checked the car which had a lot of issues and suggested that it could be the ECU, i found another ECU at my local junk yard, it came off of 1995 Ford F-150 but a 5.8, not a 5.0..
ok, well the truck runs better now, but there is an issue in which while driving, it feels like the motor revs up and down unexpectedly.. as if im pressing and releasing the throtle, engine does not shake, just randomly revs.. it feels to me like the TPS is malfunctioning, truch still shifts gears ok, idles ok, just when i'm driving that the issue comes shows, after a few times, the engine light comes on, but i tried pulling the codes but no codes appeared.. i'm puzzled.. i'm thinking about going ang pulling a TPS off the yard..
any ideas? the issue is hard to describe..

5.0L and 5.8L ECU's are programmed differently so it might be that...thats what i think though. im not an authority. am i wrong?
Could be a faulty TPS, my truck will buck up a storm and I know it's becasue of the TPS and the CEL will be on, but then say a day or two later, it will run fine for about 20 minutes with the CEL OFF, then it will act up again with CEL on. Could be just sometimes it acts up and other times it's ok. I'm going to replace my TPS for sure, I have already fixed everything else that could be causing this, but mind you, I have already pinpointed my problem, although the TPS is what it sounds like, I would investigate more.
A chilton or haynes manual would be of great benefit to you. As other's stated, it appears to be a TPS problem, but with the ECU swap, there could be more issues other than the TPS. I have read that if the truck is MAF, the ECU swap is ok, but if SD, then that may be your problem. I never did read an answer as to why the MAF ECU swap with another was ok, versus the problem's with a SD ECU swap. My only theory behind it is that th ECU with MAF would be able to calculate the appropiate fuel table whereas the SD ECU has fuel tables programed in the PROM and read's off of the various OBD1 sensors. Example is a 5.8 motor swap using a 5.0 SD ECU. This would in turn cause the 5.8 to run Lean, but nevertheless run.
I'm sure some very knowledgable FTE members will be around to help chime in with responses. My other thought is to find out why you cannot retrieve codes. Check wiring to and from the DLC.
The 5.8 and 5.0L PCM computers are not compatible.
1. The as pointed out above the 95 5.0L is MAS where the 5.8L is MAP.
2. They have different transmissions, the 95 5.0L has more than likely the 4R70W and the 5.8L would have had the E4OD transmission. They are wired differently with different sensors and components.
