I am in the process of putting together my bypass filter set-up and was wondering if it would be acceptable to use a fuel filter for this set-up. Fuel filters seem to have a better micron rating. I was thinking of the donaldson p551311.

Fuel filters are rated lower usually and are rated differently, a fuel filter is an open cycle and are therefore rated at a single pass. While hydraulic and oil filters are mult-pass rated. I would not use a fuel filter cause the media may not like the 180-200* oil and it would be harder to restrict the flow to keep from spiking oil pressures.
Springerbob's set up is one of the better ones. I myself run the donaldson ELF7405 which has a bypass built into the filter and bumps total oil capacity up to 16 quarts even.
