C6 Vacuum Modulator Hose?

I have a C6 in my '53 F100. With my cam, I don't see over 10-11" of vacuum at Idle. Recently I noticed that when I gun the motor in neutral the vacuum drops like normal, but only returns to 10". The vacuum should bounce higher while the motor is still above idle and the throttle is closed.

I traced the problem to the hose that connects to the vacuum modulator. The hose fits the small tube on the VM, but there is no way to secure it. I removed the hose and put it back on again, then ran the motor to check the vacuum. The Vacuum looked good, so I lowered the truck and tried it again. This time the vacuum was once again not bouncing above 10/11". I think that little bit of movement caused the connection to leak again.

What is normally used to secure the vacuum hose to the VM?

Is it simply a small diameter hose? There is no place for a clamp.

Should I put a dab of Silicone on the VM before I connect the hose?

Nothing secures that pipe. Maybe you need to replace it with new length of vacuum pipe.
You could try wraping a piece of copper wire around the rubber pipe and twisting the ends tight with a pair of pliers, might secure it.

I cut a small piece off the hose at the VM end, and reattached the hose to the VM. It seem to be little tighter on the VM. I'll take the the short piece to an auto store and try to get some smaller ID dia. hose.

I noticed that the piece of hose that I cut has a seam on the ID. No wonder it leaks! That seam is small, but it allows air to seep past the tube.

A friend had a length of hose with the same ID, but no seam in the ID. I replaced my hose with a length cut from his, and now I no longer have any vacuum leaks.

The vacuum is about 11" at idle, but jumps to about 15" after I gun the motor and close the throttle.

You must have a wild cam indeed, stock you would expect around 20in vacuum.
Glad you got the pipe fixed.

It's a custom Hydraulic Roller with 0.600+ lift I/E and 273/299 seat-to-seat duration. It has about 58 degrees overlap with 114 degrees LSA.

There must be a chart somewhere that give expected idle vacuum vs valve overlap.

My C6 has a shift kit, and I use a TCI Saturday Night Special converter. The rear axle is 3.25:1 with 28" tires. It turns about 3000 RPM just above 70 MPH. It's good for cruising, but long trips are hard. I drove it once from Delaware to Knoxville TN, and return. Other than that most trips have been not much over 100 miles each way. I'm thinking about switching to OD.

Keep the C6 and pay the fuel. Well worth it for peace of mind.
