Oil change

I just bought a 04 F350 6.0L KR 4x4, of course I did my own maintance on my old truck, one of the many items is changing the oil, right now I have a pain that can hold 16.7 quarts, well of course I checked and the 350 holds around 18 quarts, most times I would go to a shop and get stuff done, but with shop prices high I like to work on stuff my self. Whats the best type of pan to catch all the oil without having massive amounts of oil on the ground?

your kidding right?

Your truck holds 15 qts or so... so just go to Walmart and buy the large capacity pan they have.... mine holds 17 or 18 qts???

I guess, you could always put the plug back in, drain the pan 1/2 way through into containers and then continue draining?

Maybe try installing a Fumoto oil drain valve in lace of the stock oil drain plug... makes draining your oil quick, simple and cleaner... with no risk of ever stripping out your threads. Once the plug is installed, it stays in and you just open the "valve" to drain.

I always have extra gallon jugs laying around from window washer fluid, coolant and milk.... so hopefully you have some too?

Good luck,

Plus the motorcraft dino diesel oil comes in 5 qt bottles which means
you need 3 of them for 15 qt.
I saved up 4 gal milk jugs for my first oil change.
Now, I have 3 empty motorcraft oil bottles to use next time.

I also put the fomoto valve on my first oil change to make it
even easier next time.

Welcome to FTE lots of great info on here.

Why would he be kidding?

If he just picked up the truck and is reading it holds 18qts, he probably assumes 18 qts will come out....

My drain pan will just be about to the top when I drain it, then I fill it with 15qts and its full.

I find with my 6.0 a good 1.5qts stays in the engine probably in the hpop. I usually get about 13.5 qts out. So thats what I put it. Brings it right to before the MAX mark on my dipstick. When I would put 15qts in I would always be over the entire indicator up onto the metal of the dipstick and she would run rough as the crank was slapping the oil. took out 1.5 with my famoto and smooth as glass.

Use motorcraft filters. OIl and both fuel filters.

When you do refill your oil, start with 14 quarts, then add as you need to come up on stick.

I buy my filters on line at :

Ford 6.0 Liter Turbo Diesel Truck Filters, Air Filters, Oil Filters, Transmission Filters And Glow Plugs - Diesel Filters,Additives, brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks

Buy the Racor, they make the Motorcraft.

Go to the tech folder for good set of instructions for fuel filter change. (DON'T USE THE 1/2" SOCKET SQUARE IN THE UPPER FUEL FILTER CAP, THEY TEND TO CRACK!)

Thanks, well in a few more weeks when I have time off from work I can get most of the maintance done, of course ordering the HFCM Drain Plug to replace stock. By what i see I'll have a little fuel when the HFCM and filter are taken out, so will give me time to get new filter ready and check for trash in housing

If he was reading the "Owners Guide Supplement" it clearly states the oil capacity is 15 quarts!

Yeah I start with about 13.5 and go up from there is needed. I also use a 5 gal bucket with a fumoto valve. Actually soon to have a Femco valve its on order. The 5gal fits with about 4in clearence on my 350 SRW with 2.5in leaf lift in front.

The Femco valve looks like a very interesting application. I am always concerned with my Fumuto that oil will be left in the pan due to its thread length. How 'bout a report back once you've used it? Thanks, gm.

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
The Fumoto I have been using for 120K with no problems. I like it. I am switching though to the Femco. Seems to be a better design. I have taken the Fumoto out after a change to see how much is left and I didnt get anything out. I was happy with that. There was the same amount that would be left if you used just a plug. The Femco is a better design in my opinion and I have the option to get one at cost so I am going to try it. One of the things I didnt like about the Fumoto over the years was that its just a ball valve, yeah its got a detent so it cant "fall down" but anyone could drain your oil with the flip of the wrist not that they cant with a wrench but you get the idea plus its one more thing hanging down to catch on stuff. I mean if the Fumoto hits a log or something then your front axle is probably hanging on the other side of it. I am more worried about road hazards. I am worried if hell I hit a truck tire or something on the road it could curl up and wack that 1in nipple right out. The Femco is only drained when you use the special hose so its alot safer plus it has a dust cap on a chain. But then again the Fumoto has been there for 7 years and 120k with no problems. Just going to try something new. Will let you know how it goes.

If you use the Fumoto valve to drain directly into jugs (like I do), just remember not to push the jugs over to the edge of the truck and forget to take them out. When you back over a jug and it pops, it make a hell of a mess.

Don't ask me how I know.
