How bad is this?

I've got to leave in about 3 hrs for a 800 mile trip. Heading out empty, but hauling back a 68 Camaro on an open center car hauler. Having 'technical difficulties' with my Edge Evo CS and can't change to Tow mode. I'm currently in level 2, and have no display to monitor EGT, Trans temp, or anything other than stock gauges. Going from SE Mo to nearly Knoxville, Tn. If I go easy on the truck what are the odds of seriously effing something up? My sig has all the specs on the truck.

I've always played it safe and used Tow mode even for the lightest loads... Am I just being a weenie, or am I justified in my anxiety?

You are probably only talking about 5k pounds. Not very much load for these trucks. If u take it easy in the hills, you will be fine. I tow big trailers all the time but let the truck decide where its comfortable at and just ride at that speed. I would like to add a transmission gauge and have not but I have had no problems using common sense. When I stop for fuel or to eat, I always let the truck idle to cool down. Have a safe trip

Keeping the rpms up around 2400 will keep the egts down. I don't think there are any large hills on that route....but I've never driven that route.

Thanks guys! Made it back without any issues. 769.4 miles, averaged 13.78mpg round trip. The truck seemed to cruise 70mph@2k rpm, felt better up towards 2200-2300rpm, but that was not a safe speed to maintain (nearly 80mph). I really wish I'd had my Evo working to monitor the trans temp and EGT. On the longer hillclimbs I just used my ear to gauge how hard I was pulling the engine (a very scientific method of 'wait for the whoosh').

BTW- the route did have some pretty decent hills. We took 2 lanes from Cape to Paducah, then went I-24 from Paducah, KY then I-40 pretty much all the way to LeNoir City.

Anyway, thanks again for the input everybody.

Oh, and I just walked into my office to see my Evo sitting on the desk (still connected to USB) and lit up just like it's supposed to. Plugged it back into the truck and works like a champ...

No need to worry towing such a light load on that setting. 'Tow' mode is just shifting in the lower gears with a higher RPMs. Driving at 70mph at 18-19,000 rpms would have been fine/better to do. If you think that you need to, just turn the Over Drive off. Please don't drive pulling a trailer at 80mph, been there and done that and only by Grace I and others are not dead and tens of thousands of dollars of equipment are not destroyed. Get out of the habbit of driving so fast.
