Second time it did it headed up to the mountains 80 degrees huge incline, towing small pop-up camper. way in the red. both times all i have to do is turn off ac slow down to bout 40mph and she slowly drops. (2000 7.3 L Lariat, 125K) Truck is equiped with: 4" turbo back muffler delete exhaust, Air-aid cold air intake, juice w/attitude programer, trottle body spacer, runnin on 37's......Fan clutch, t-stat, water pump, radiator, where to begin?

I heard a few stories on here where they changed everything but the radiator and it stayed the same. Once they changed the radiator problem solved. So if your not leaking, fluid is up, Water is moving then I would change temostat and radiator and problem solved. I'm not sure if are pressure caps can be tested, but that to. Good luck Chet

You can check for cold spots on the radiator after the rest of the truck is up to operating temp, but the clutch is also a good place to start.

Have u checked in between the inter-cooler and the radiator for debris? Often overlooked and usually will be most noticeable when towing.

Well sort of, the OP hasn't responded to the Chinook landing on his hood yet, I'd suspect the clutch on his fan has given up.

When the fan hooks up, there is no question that it's happening. It's the only load I can "feel" on the engine. Might be pure folklore, but I heard once when these fans are locked up they consume 21hp moving air... that's a metric a*% ton of air, and can be heard from all around.

lol amen to that. When it's really hot out and the A/C is blasting and I'm pulling a huge hill by my house on the way home, it sounds like a fleet of helicoptres coming down the road behind me when that thing kicks in, and the power loss is quite easy to feel as well. Feels like a giant A/C compressor on steroids just kicked in. I hardly ever get the fan coming on in the winter so I tend to forget about it until one of those hot May or June days finally kicks up, then it reminds me pretty quick it's still there.

I have seen bad thermostats be speed sensitive as far as heating.
defiantly should hear the fan.
how it the edge programer delivering fuel? it could cause some extra heat. remove it and see what happens.
lastly what is a throttle body spacer for a 7.3?

Exactly. 1st place to look. if its never been out I guaranty it blocked

usually you'll find enough hair and dirt and sh--tuff to make a small dog.

pull the rad and pressure wash it from the back to the front. A/c will work better and no more heating problems

Barney

I dont know if i'm hearing a helicopter land on the hood... (how do i check if the fan clutch is begining to fail? replaced t-stat, intercooler space is free of depri. Still in the red? why is it only when towing? i can do 100mph up hill 110 degree temp out side and stay cool with no load. Airaid Throttle Body Spacer 400-521 throttle body spacer

Check the fan with the engine cold. Can you spin it freely or does it have some resistance? If it spins free, the clutch is dead. Checking it while running requires a strobe gun to make sure its spinning fast enough at a certain RPM. You will know when it kicks in though. Its a distinct sound thats hard to miss, even with the windows up. You'll also feel it in the throttle, like somebody just dumped an extra 1000lbs on the trailer.

It only does it towing because you're working the engine harder. Cruising down the highway pushes enough air through the front end that the fan doesn't need to kick in. Its the starting off with a load that adds to it. Then the a/c being on dumps more heat into the mix.

the fan has resistance while cold... Meaning the fan clutch is good, Correct? the water pump is not leaking and i only over heat under load, does that mean i can assume water pump is good also?
