Make it last

In case you haven't seen my most recent post, I'm the guy with the blown freeze plug. Anyway, while the truck is in the shop, what are the main things that I can have done to make this truck last for 15 more years?

Currently, she's bone stock except for Silverline Exhaust. I keep the oil changed regularly as well as the fuel filters and air filter. Anyway I've been reading about things like Zoodad, EGR delete, blue spring mod, etc. What do you guys recommend to do to make this gem last?

Not looking to be the fastest guy on the block either. Any input is greatly appreciated.

start with a coolant filter and some gauges go from there by what the gauges tell you

For starters, buy your fuel from a place that sells a lot of it on a regular basis to help keep your rig from contaminated fuel.

Update to the one piece STC fitting. Replace the dummy plugs and standpipes. The updated turbo drain line is a good upgrade. If you want an EGR delete, then I would recommend getting a tuner. I chose to install the bulletproof EGR cooler. If you don't know your EOT and ECT values, then you might want to have a new core installed in the oil cooler.

The fuel pressure regulator spring is easy - I would wait and do that myself.

Difficulty depends on your skills - can't really answer that.

You will need to pull the HPOP out and it is best to pull the intake manifold to do the job.

Dummy plugs and standpipes are components of the high pressure oil delivery system to the injectors. Google "6.0L bible" and look through it for pics, etc.

Bismic,

Thanks for the input. You mention some things like STC fitting, turbo drain line, etc. Where would you recommend getting those things from? Internet or local shops? Do you have part numbers? Could you make a list and put it in order of importance of what should be done?

I've heard of EGR delete, but what is up with the oil cooler? I've heard about casting sand in them. Could you explain what issues your recommendations fix.

Some people like to do an EGR delete but I haven't heard a good reason for doing it, except that you are getting rid of emission controls.

In my state we have diesel smog testing and they check for the Cat and emission controls. If your state has testing, or may introduce it while you own the truck, you may want to leave the EGR alone.

The problem is that the engine oil cooler can plug which overheats the EGR cooler. If the EGR cooler overheats it lets coolant into the intake manifold. That can get expensive! If the engine oil cooler is OK the EGR cooler does not usually cause any problems.

You need gauges to monitor the engine coolant temperature and the engine oil temperature. (The dash gauges will NOT do this for you). IIRC the difference between the two temperatures should not be more than 15 degrees F with the ECT at 190 and temperatures stable.

Once you figure out your engine cooler condition you can plan other repairs/upgrades around that. You would not want to do the STC fitting and then have to go back in again to replace the engine oil cooler!

Check out the Tech Folder, there is a lot of great information there.

Yep, sort of need to take some time to determine what the current
state is of the oil cooler (the temp delta between ECT & EOT as stated
above). No point buying parts until you know which ones you NEED!

Technically speaking you can get caught and fined regardless if your state has emissions testing or not. Testing just makes it more likely then not that you will be caught. If you travel to places that are strick with their vehicle laws that can also be a problem.

EGR deletes/bypasses are overrated. I am flowing more fuel and my values are hotter then 90% of the 6.0 owners out there and yet not only do I still have original EGR/Oil Coolers, but I have the same ones that came on my truck when it just had 20 miles on it. Well beyond 6 figures now on the odometer.

The delete/bypass is up to you, but it's the mod that can keep on costings if get caught.

This is why I ask this stuff. I never really heard much bad about doing the EGR delete until I posted questions about it. Thanks for the input.
