i'll still currently help out of boredom, but look at the current threads, half this crap has been covered in the last month already, the other half a month or so before that.
people always seem to ignore the search feature, and i also believe they don't realize there is more than one page to the offroad forum, if they even take the time to scroll down the main page at all before posting.
So I just went back by the salvage yard to check this axle again, the guy swore up and down that it's a D60, but I'm not so sure anymore.. After doing a little bit of reading, It seems that all I had to do was scrape off the crud on the top right webbing, and it should have had a 60 stamped in it.. That's what I get for not reading, I guess. The diff. cover bolts were 1/2", but the guy still swears that it's a 60. Said he'd been doing this for over 40 years, and all the 60's he'd ever seen had 1/2" diff cover bolts. He said the only way that it would have 9/16" bolts is if it had dual rear wheels.. However, I was able to scrape the crud off of the tag on the left side of the differential, and only one row of numbers was still legible:
3 54 (i'm guessing 3.54 gears) D8 (and then some other illegible character)
$500 is a helluva price for a 77.5-79 D60 but its an absolute rip off for a D44HD.
I looked everywhere for a 60 for my truck but wasnt able to find anything locally at the time. I had junk yards search their network as well as craigslist, pirate and a couple trader papers and classifieds. I ended up getting mine from Ohio.
I have since seen a few trucks rusting away but their owners are all "going to fix it one day"
Be careful when you buy your 460 as well. $500 is waaay too much to pay for a core. Around here they usually go for around $200-250
dtl, this is for your 80's truck? right? don't limit yourself to the 77.5-79 d60's either. an 85.5-91.5 kp or 92-97 bj d60 will also work. while the 77.5-79 are the most desirable and easiest to work with due to more room on the drivers side axle tube, they aren't you're only option.
