Cool Two questions need help

i have a 87 250 with a 6.9 diesel also i am new to diesels this is my first one, my first question is when i rev the motor up low rpm or high rpm i see white smoke out the tale pipe and i dont know where to start to look for the problem. my second question is about glow plugs when i got the pick up the glow plugs did not heat up at all to i got a new relay and the black box that the relay sites on i think that is the controller, will i put all the in and now the glow plugs still dont glow but they get worm, where do i start looking for the problem here?

On the smoke thing it could be unburned fuel or steam from your cooling system getting through. Hopefully just a fuel problem. Does it do it when it's all warmed up or just cold? Few things it could be, bad injector, maybe injection pump. Or... since the glow plugs were not working the previous owner might have used a lot of ether. You can bend a rod if you're not careful doing that (a hot glowplug can ignite the ether when the piston is not in the right position and then fire it while it is fighting the other pistons--bad situation, ALWAYS make sure the glow plugs have cycled off and had a chance to cool before useing ether). A slightly bent rod will give a less than full ignition of the fuel, hence white smoke. Start with the easier stuff though. A leakdown test will help you eliminate a cooling system problem. On the glow plug thing, yeah they should get red hot... when my controllers go I just bypass them and put in a manual toggle switch...

Your truck sounds like a late year build if you have the solid state controller. Do your GP terminal have a spade terminal or bullet top. Or the previous owner may have up graded it to solid state. Check your build date on the drivers door post.......
