Hello
I purchased a 2002 Excursion in June. Up until now, no problem. Last week the truck started to stall out when at stop lights. Tonight when I got in I noticed the tach was going from 1 to 3 and back down then back up. I drove several blocks and stopped at a light. The truck suddendly lunged forward. It scared the heck out of me and I'm now afraid to drive it.
Any advise on what this may be? I could not find anything in the recalls that mention the Excusrion doing this. I'll have it towed to dealer. Just would like to know what I may be looking at before they take it. I really love this truck and don't want to have to part with it.
The engine is a 5.4 L V8 16 V. Automatic. It does have Cruise Control and 4 wheel drive ASB.
My apologies if this sounds ridiculous - I'm on my last 1/4 of a tank. The manual lists my tank capacity at 44 gallons. Is it at all posible that I am getting sparadic draw on the fuel pump because of low volume? I'm not really sure if that would casue the surge.
I'll let you know what the dealer has to say this weekend.
Honestly sounds like you might have a vacuum leak. do you hear any abnormal constant hissing noises? Your problem you are describing sounds like a the engine is actually surging, constantly trying to adjust the air fuel micture for the unmeasured extra air, causing the engine to speed up and down constantly also stalling as a result when it your coming to a stop.
Check the IAC servo and the throttle position sensor. You can put an ohm meter on the throttle position sensor (TPS) to see if it is working properly. If the sensor is bad you could get unpredictable engine speeds. The same goes with the IAC servo since it controls the air through the engine and therefore engine speed.
COP going bad? was it misfiring? when they misfire the computer will try and compensate forthe low rpm by raising the idle, and it will do it very quickly as you described!
