sending unit?

Well I checked out my sending unit and the float was filled with gas so I replaced it with the one I bought from lmc. In stalled it but nothing has changed, I'm going mad trying to find out that the problem is. I just had to unexpectedly replace the raditior and ingition coil so the well is almost dry for the next two weeks. Anyone have any ideas on what's causing the sending unit to do this?

Did you test to see if the gauge works? Take the hot wire at the sending unit and touch it to ground. Should make the gauge move.

Or remove the sending unit and move the arm to see if gauge moves. I'm assuming the issue is the gauge doesn't reading?

Does your other gauges work? or do you have idiot lights?

There is a voltage regulator(small resistor) on the back of the cluster that drops the voltage for everything to read correctly. If that fails, nothing will work(if you have oil pressure/water temp gauges).

If water temp reads fine, then likely it's just the fuel gauge that is faulty.

Speedo sounds like a bad cable. It will cause it to jump around at low speed. If the cable gets a flaw in it(braiding comes apart), or gets dry(no lube), it will stick and cause jumping.

Likely no one will have "new" gauges. Might look at the back of the panel and see if there is a break in the wiring. There is a clear plastic sheet that holds copper strips, also check the plug also as it's kinda a crude set up and could just be a bad connection.

You might just have to check around and find another cluster? I scrapped out my '67 couple years ago, but sold the cluster already. I know it had idiot lights, so it might have worked for you. Check the classifieds.

You can pull the speedo cable out of the housing and check it. Nothing holds it in, it's free floating. Slip it out one end, if it's just dry, you can lube it. Needs to be very light, like white lithium(or graphite is what it's suppose to have). Slip it back in and see. If the cable is fraid, then it needs replaced.

There is a voltage regulator (small resistor-ICVR) on the back of the cluster that drops the voltage for everything to read correctly. If that fails, nothing will work (if you have oil pressure/water temp gauges).
All these trucks have a fuel and temp gauge as standard equipment. Oil and amp gauges were an option over the idiot (warning) lamps that came standard equipment.

The ICVR = Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator, when it fails, does not affect the amp gauge, and AFAIK, not the oil pressure gauge.

When the ICVR begins to fail, the needles of the temp and fuel gauge do "the hula" .. swing back/forth on their own.

C6DZ-10804-A .. ICVR: 1967/69 F100/350. 1970 F100/350 is one year only (C9AZ-10804-A). 1971/86 is the same (D1AZ-10804-A). Instrument cluster: 1967/69 have wiring, 1970/72's have a printed circuit board.

Jumping speedo can be caused by several factors: Worn gears in the speedo's odometer, a stripped nylon speedo DRIVEN gear (end of the cable) and/or a stripped DRIVE gear (on the output shaft).

Inside the speedo cables housing is a woven steel core. It is supposed to be lubed every so often, but most peeps are unaware.

When the lube dries out, the woven steel core binds up inside the housing, sooner or later...it snaps. A "universal" woven steel core can be bought in any autoparts store.

You cut it to length, coat it with graphite (or a fine film of white lithium grease), install in the housing. The DRIVEN gears are still available from Ford. The nylon DRIVE gears are replacedable only if the truck has a M/T.

If an A/T (C4/C6), the steel DRIVE gear is made as part of the output shaft.

Why replace them if you aren't sure you need to? Why replace them all if only the fuel gauge is the problem?

It could be the dash gauge, and/or the sending unit, and/or the ICVR, and/or a grounded or cut wire.

Throwing money at the issue won't do anything...except empty your wallet.

C7TZ-9280-D .. Instrument Cluster Fuel Gauge-1967/70 F100/350 / 1969/70 Econoline / Obsolete
