Last week I bought a 2006 F-250 4wd. before I bought the truck, I tested the 4wd and everything worked, but I later discovered the hubs were in the "locked" position. I put the hubs in the "auto" position and drove the truck home (700 miles from Florida to N. Georgia) Last night I had an chance to try out the 4wd and it didn't work. with the hubs in the "auto" position, I put the switch in 4wd high position and the AC went from the panel to the defrost positon, I realized I had a vacuum leak. then I tried 4wd low, it worked but the hubs still won't lock. after that I couldn't get the truck out of 4wd low. after some testing I found the vacuum actuator was bad and I replaced it with a new one. 4wd started working, but I still have a leak. after some more testing, I found the supply line to the drivers hub had come out of the holder going over the axle and had been pinched numerous times and it looked like swiss cheese. with that fixed the hubs are now locking and 4wd high works, but the transfer case will NOT go into low range.
Did you RTFM ??? In order to shift either into or out of 4 low, you have to be in neutral with your foot on the brake pedal, and going less than 3 MPH. If any of those conditions are not met, nothing will happen. Check your brake lights--If they don't come on when you step on the brake pedal, that will also stop it from engaging or disengaging 4 low.

Excellent... I just bought the truck and did NOT get an owners manual, so no, I did not RTFM.
