I keep hearing about superchips, and the Diablo Predator. I am new to the forum, so I have not been around forever but in the past few weeks I haven't heard anything about Hypertech. Is this because no one has considered them, they are horrible, or just no one likes their products? Just looking at the hypertech the highest setting they have is 50 hp and 108lb ft? Seems lower than all the rest, is that why no one is using it?
I have a stock 02' X 7.3 and was looking to get a little more umph out of it. I do not tow a lot with it most of the time, it is more of people and animal hauler. I have a need to tow a 6000lb boat about 600 miles once a year (hilly terrain), and the other misc towing needs throughout the year. I have been reading the forums, and it appears - superchip / diablo, bigger down pipe (3"+), open exhaust to 4", with trans temp / boost gauges were the norm. An acquaintance at work that has a 7.3 PSD said to buy the hypertech, and weld a straight pipe in where the muffler was. Would this be incredibly loud? I do not want to spend a thousand dollars on the truck, as of yet.
Can someone steer me in the right direction for an inexpensive upgrade that won't turn my wallet cherry red =).
I have the Hypertech III Power Programmer on my '00 PSD and can really feel the power gains. I don't know the others' feelings regarding this (remember this is a programmer, not a chip replacement). I can't say how well it helps transmission shifts because I have the 6-speed, but it does help acceleration significantly and improves towing in my truck. I did not notice any mileage gains though (Hypertech says they guarantee the power, but not the mileage increases). It actually dropped the first time I installed it, but after removing and reinstalling it, the mileage got back to normal.
Just my experience...
I have a 99 with the Hypertech Power Programmer III I noticed the difference the first time I drove it installed. I have had it in since Thanksgiving and I went from about 15.5 mpg to 17.8 mpg. As far as the trans goes, it does firm up the shifting but nothing too stiff. IMHO nice upgrade. Look around at some earlier threads, I think if you go adding too much power you need to have additional guages to watch your temps.
Hope this helps you out
PS. Welcome to the site. Enjoy the info, Aviod the nuts. (you will see what I mean the more you stop in to visit. GOOD people just gets kind of sticky some times.)
In 1994 Hypertech had extremely agreessive programming for Chevy/GM 6.5 diesels. They blew up a lot of engines. In 1995 they detuned their programs by a large amount and it been that way ever since.
Generally, Hypertechs are designed for counter sales, so a parts-picker at the local auto parts store can sell you one without having to know a thing about the product. Sort of like a burger from McDonalds.
Other's have been safely producing 50-65HP programs for towing and day to day use for years. Its not until you get into the 75HP+ range that towing becomes a concern and nessitates a downpipe. Most of my Diablo and Superchips customers do not have larger downpipes.... but they know not to tow in the 78HP or 80HP setting unless they make the modes.
Not sure what I will be going with as of yet. I sure do like the Diablo Delta & Superchips programmers. I think one of them will be the first mod for the X, minus cosmetics that I have done like tinted windows / bugdeflector.
I would like to remove the stock muffle. I have yet to hear one that is removed, so I can make a decision. I assume removing it will also lessen EGT's. I hear the fluttery sound can be annoying, so I will have to wait and see.
Thanks again for the input, this forum is great! Thanks again guys.
