I am new here to this site & dont kow if anyone has asked this but here goes, I have a 2000 excursion, 7.3, it just quit running so i got out & found from the front to the rear full of oil(even up the back window). Looking under thr hood the top of the engine from the front to back was coverd. 1st-is there a low oil cut out switch or low oil presure switch that could have blown plus not let it start even after i filled the oil up then 2nd what about the injector pump seal?, thanks for all the help
The injectors are oil driven, so a lack of oil theoretically will keep the engine from running.
You can also have other problems keeping the engine from running, like an ICP going bad, or the fuel bowl heater shorting out, fuel pump giving up the ghost, or so many other reasons.
i am by tulsa oklahoma, thanks for all the help, just to let you know, it ran fine till the oil leak driveing home from work, i was driveing when just lost all throttle so i costed to the side, it cranks good just wont start up & the top of the engine is full of oil, i did see some dripping by the injector pump but it is to dirty, my flash lite was weak, it was to hot & it wouldnt start to realy see where it was comeing from...lol
It is likely the oring on the rear plug of the HPOP.......this happened to mine....you can get orings from guzzle at diesel orings......don't run it out of oil.....it doesn't take long to dump gallons
As mentioned, it is likely a HPOP seal. I changed the oil this weekend in one of my Excursions, and sucked out about 3/4 of a quart of oil from my HPOP reservoir as well. Well, like a doofus, I forgot to put oil back in the HPOP. The engine fired up, ran about 2 seconds, and died immediately. I immediately realized what happened, dumped a quart of oil in the HPOP reservoir, and it fired right back up.
Sounds like you HPOP is leaking and has dumped enough oil for your injectors to stop working. I bet if you seal the HPOP up (and replace your non-serviceable plug while youre at it) you wont see any HPOP problems for a long long time.
Was it a sudden leak, or has it been dripping for a while? Do you have spots on the ground where you park?
When my HPOP was leaking, I pressure washed it and then stuffed paper towels around it and felt around every hose/plug with a qtip while it was running until I found where the oil is coming from...mine was just a drip so it was a little harder to find, it sounds like yours is slightly more drastic...

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you have been given some good advice. Please let us know what you find.
Welcome I agree I believe the HPOP-( high pressure oil pump ) o-rings to be your problem you will probably need a mirror and flash-light to locate the leak . I had one let go and I had a trail of oil from my dad's house to mine 13 miles. Don't hesitate to ask any questions fire away that's what were her for. Do you know where the HPOP is ? When these 7.3 get to low on oil they just shut down so you must be really low in the crankcase and in the HPOP.
thanks for all the help, i am going to get some cleaner to clean it & check for were the leak is. I have worked on alot of big gens with all types of diesels, but never mine, go figure. anyways i hope that is all it is, it did dump over 1 gallon of oil but i filled it back up but it still didnt start, i didnt fill the res back up so i am sure that had aomething to do with it. I will check & fix the leak & get back, thanks again
