391???

Yes i am looking to buy a 1975 F150 4x4. The truck is in pretty good condition. The owner says that the motor that is in it is a 391. I have heard of a 390 but never a 391. The owner told me that two local brothers tore the motor down and rebuilt it and souped it up. His mechanic told me the same story at a totally different time while the owner wasn't there. So i am pretty sure the story is true. The motor has LOTS of power. It has Winsor "302-351" valve covers on it. And the block does look relitivly small to be a big block. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it? I was wondering if maybe there is a bore kit for a 351 to make 391 or something. For the winsor valve covers to fit on any engine they would have to be on windsor heads right, and i was always under the impression that winsor heads were way too small so why would someone put them on a different engine. Also the truck's transfer case only has 2wd and 4wd. It doesn have a 4low or 4high. Does this mean that the power is put straight to the front without any power enhance. And would this rig be good for trail driving and mud playing. It does have a Granny low 4speed. Thanks

391???

Yes, Prodigy, there really is a 391 engine, but it was only used in the C series medium to heavy duty commercial vehicles ( C700's I believe). This also holds true for the 361 motor available in the C600's. Monster torque engine, no mileage to speak of, though that could be mostly due to the weight of the vehicle. By the way, I've been told by an associate, who is a 427 side-oiler fanatic(He puts them in everything, you should see his IMSA modified '71 mustang) that the crank out of the 391 with some minor snout modification is a direct fit into the 427. The C900 series came with an optional 475 engine that would just flat climb a telephone pole. But it's very heavy engine that would require major re-work to front suspension in a lighter vehicle. Also very expensive to maintain, as heads run a grand each bare, and the heads were notorious for failing if overheated.

391???

If it has windsor valve covers on it, it has to be a small block.

They make a 393 stroker for a 351W, whichi s problably what the truck has..

it uses stock 351 rods, and stock 302 pistons.

if that engine is a true 391 engine block it will look just like a true 390 except on the right side of the block instead of it saying 352 which is a true fe block it will have a mirror image of a 105 which is a ft block.
