'06 5.4FF Shift Cable burn thru

Long delay bringing new travel trailer home last week. Shift cable not placed properly in retainer during assembly (there is NO way it popped out) and it was resting on exhaust manifold. Evidently towing camper made enough heat to burn through the shielding and truck trans would not move out of drive.

The good news is that I could climb under (getting too old for that stuff!) and put it into gear/park by hand. But of course I didn't know that for the first 4 hours.

Hopefully my misfortune leads someone else to correct their out of place cable before they're stuck 200 miles from home and all the extended warranties and insurance companies in the USA aren't going to find an "authorized repair facility" after 5pm on a Friday

Actually it is extremely easy for that cable to pop out of the plastic piece that holds it in place. I did it going over a speed bump last summer. Anyway the fix is a new plastic retainer but I have not heard of anyone finding it alone they all have had to buy the whole cable assembly.

Ok but right now I can only shift into drive after shifting into neutral manually under the truck. Will the new plastic harness fix that?

Not sure you are having the same issue but it might. When this happened to me I could move my shifter but once it got all the way down to 1st gear it put the truck into reverse so I could never even get into drive without shifting it under the truck. But it might but like I said you have to purchase the whole cable assembly when all you most likely need is the new plastic clip.

I had the same problem. Had to buy a new cable shifter kit from dealer. Not too difficult to replace. Hardest part is fishing the wire through the console.
You can see my temporary fix below.

Thanks for the advice fellas. My problem was actually that the sheathing around the shifting cable was non existent for about 6". So instead of having the tension required to keep it tight while shifting it would flop out in that 6". I did a temp. Fix by throwing about 8 zipties around the cable where the sheathing should be which stopped it from flopping out. I then drove it to the dealership and had them replace the cable. The total was 250$.

I just had the same problem on my 2007. The previous owner put a 6 inch lift, cold air intake, & headers on it. the headers are a little longer than the original manifolds were & the cable burnt in half. I replaced the cable but it was still going to be resting on the header. I put a piece of soldering pad between the cable & the header. It has a melting point of 2,500 degrees & will not burn at all. Hope this helps someone else with similair issues

Parking Lot Fail.

I am currently on a road trip and had the same issue, pulled into a movie theater parking lot and couldn't move out of park. the cable housings were burnt right through by the exhaust. No parts available in town so while I waited for the stealership to order me a new one I pulled the old unit out and managed the ultimate redneck repair job, literally using baling wire and electrical tape! Held out until I could get the new unit in too! ****ty engineering on the unit having it that close to the exhaust and with such a lameass "heat shield" to boot. When I get home I plan to pull it again and wrap it with some heat tape.
