Just finishing up putting a mildly built 5.8 into my dads f150 that used to have a 5.0. What is the timing supposed to be and how do I set it. My Haynes and chiltons manuals are very vague with the how to and they say to check under the hood for the timing specs. The good is from a 5.0 so that won't do me any good with the 5.8.
The engine is from an 89 but the truck is a 93 and the ecu is for a 93

The stock timing is usually 10 degrees BTDC but everyone says to try and bump it up. Most have gotten to about 12 degrees with no issues. Basically, start out at 10 degrees, and work up as high as you can without any pinging. As far as setting it, there is a spout connector by your ignition control module. It looks like a small fuse. You need to remove it and that keeps it from advancing. Of course make your timing marks, start it up, and dial it in using a timing light. I got my 302 up to almost 13 with a wider gapped plug. While I'm at it, I'll do a search for you to find the post where everyone talked about it. I'll post a link if I find it.
It has to do with a full tune up, but if you scroll down, you'll see where he describes how to set the timing. The search box on this site never finds anything anymore haha. Hope this helps!
