try getting an alignment, and even rotate the tires. does the tie rod seem like theres alot of play in it? if you sit on the ground and watch the front end while someone is in your truck shacking steering wheel back and forth you can sometimes see what the weak point is (ex. abnormal play in tierod)
yeah its pretty typical with the ttb's.this is why you want front end alignments after any repairs such as ball joints and tie rods and to make sure tire rotations of every 10k miles or so.sooner if you notice any heavy ware of course.
this is why i think it's kinda silly to see people skimp with their f250 dually converts by not making sure the front accepts the dually wheels.rotations are important, front to rear, not just side to side up front.paying to dismount, mount, rebalanced every rotation would just be expensive.
how many miles since you rotated the front tires to the back now,and how long since alignment?
I bought new tires a few months ago, had them mounted and balanced and the alignment checked. They said the alignment was perfect and waived the alignment fee. I got home the other day and noticed a lot of wear on that tire. I haven't rotated the tires because it hasn't even been 3k miles on them.
Finally got around to starting the truck up and having my wife steer back and forth...
The passenger side tie rod end is snapping back and forth (in the same direction as the truck travels straight) when she turned the steering wheel from left to right. The boot on that joint is mostly gone. I assume that's the culprit. Are there 3 joints in the tie rod setup? Where do you guys buy your tie rod ends? I remember reading that they were expensive... I'd rather do all of them at once as to not create the next weakest link and hunt them down every so often.
that ebay link with all 4 links looks right. i see they said its "OE" quality. when i hear that i think of advance autos cheapest line called OE brand. moog would prob be the best, whatever ya get make sure its grease able and that you do grease em. if you are going to do all 4 maybe look into the adjuster sleeves that hold the inners to the outer? i bet your alignment guy would like all new parts and then you dont have to teat the old ones down just make sure ya measure lengths and get as close as ya can
Since HD D50 and extended cab, I'm not sure I have the right parts chosen...
RH INNER: MOOG Part # DS1138T (for some reason Rockauto seems to denote RWD on this part, but when I look under my truck, I definitely have that tab on this part)
LH INNER: MOOG Part # DS1072
RH OUTER: MOOG Part # ES2727R
LH OUTER: MOOG Part # ES2728L
ADJUSTMENT SLEEVE: MOOG Part # ES2079S (are these identical on both sides, LH & RH, on 4WD models?)
Same as the gas, and keep in mind they sometimes call the right hand inner rod the drag link.
The adjustment sleeves can be switched side to side. When you do change them let the truck coast in neutral with the wheels strait, do not touch the brakes, this will keep things relaxed and make install of the new parts easier.
Supposedly that one is for: Frt Strg; Inner; RH; RWD; w/4200 lb. or more front axle; Exc. Crew Cab; Exc. Ambulance; connecting tie rod; Problem Solver
Evidently I'm supposed to have this one?:
Frt Strg; Inner; RH; 4WD; Connecting Tie Rod
Notice the tab on the RWD version. Is this one applicable to both RWD and 4WD because of the 4,200lb+ axle mention? Do any of you w/ an '86 4WD super cab have the one with the tab? I've heard of getting the wrong parts from RockAuto before. I just want to make sure I buy the right ones the first time so I can finally get this done. Also, I want to ensure the truck currently has the correct parts under it and if it doesn't make it correct.
Are Moog leaf spring bushings, sway bar frame bushings and end links any good?
are you talking about that tab on the thread side of the tie rod? i think that is just for the adjusting sleve to hold it ? not vital one way or the other?
