I need help with a noise

So I am a new diesel owner, well a year but I think that is still new. I have put about 3K on it since I have owned it. Once in a while when I start the truck I hear a "thud" sound, almost like a door shutting. It happens about two to three seconds after start up. The "thud" is very inconsistent and at times will vary in intensity. Also it only happens once. So if any one has had this happen or has a clue on what this may be please give me a heads up. Thanks

It is the door in the Heat/ac system. Turn off the AC before starting ,and the thud goes away.
Someone on here had to explain it to me. Jim

I'll try starting w/o AC on for a while and then try with AC. Thanks for the response.

It may just be a ventilation system door moving.
A check valve may be failing allowing the vacuum system to leak down when the truck is not running.
This may be so slow a leak that a long period needs to pass before the door has moved far enough to make a noise.
After starting the vacuum takes a moment to build up in the lines and move things to where the ***** tell them they should be.

Hmmm, that would make sense. I'm planning on washing the truck today so I'll start it with the defrost on and see if it thumps.

Turning it off will tell you it is in the HVAC.

Started with defrost selected, no thump. I'll let it sit this week and try one more time but more than likely start it in the off position in the future to see if the thump returns.

If you have a vacuum leak as Shorebird mentioned, the AC will default to defrost.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

There is nothing wrong with your truck. It is working as it should when you have your 'temp' on a certain setting.

Yep it is fine. My 02 did that from the day I bought it new.
