Not user serviceable! Garrett can install a new bearing cartridge but I do not think they are offering this service yet, if you keep clean oil and don't overheat or shut down hot it should last indefinitely!

No, the 38R is not rebuildable! Found out the hard way.
They do sell a new center cartridge, but it costs pretty much what a new 38R does.

How so Greg? Have they come out with something new?

I smoked mine. Did a lot of calling around and I could buy a new center catridge, but then also needed new compressor and exhaust wheel, not considering my housing were probably no good either, which all totalled up would have cost more than a brand new 38r.

I did read somewhere on PSN that Garret do a cartridge exchange for around $500.
You need to contact Garret not a dealer.

Probably true if you mean more than it is worth VS a new turbo. Best bet is not to toast one out in the first place.

Ssshhhhoooott!! I wish you would have let me know that!! It must have been the high rpms it was going cuz it also took out the serpentine belt and tensioner. But I gave that car a run for their money!
