Hello All hope you can help me clarify the exact problem I am having. First of all I have just purchased this expy knowing it had problems, the guy told me it had transmission trouble, after test driving it I realized it does not have transmission trouble, it shifts fine, but it is stuck in 4low. I have read about the shift motor, and when I get under the vehicle, I can hear the motor shifting while the switch is being turned. The 4x4 light comes on and the 4low light comes on inthe switches respective position. Does it sound like something inside the case is broken? Also when I drive it down the road the Speedometer is showing way faster than I am driving, I did not know if this would be linked to the transfer case or not. I have a 2000 Navigator also so I am familiar with the A4wd just so you all know. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Unfortunately I'd have to say yes it sounds like something is broken inside the TC. Although first I'd remove the shift motor and watch to see if the end is turning, just to make sure.
Thats what I was afraid of, so I guess I will pull the motor after a while and check it out. I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy a used TC or get this one rebuilt.
My way of thinking is that it's a used truck so used parts should be fine. Use good judgement when selecting the t/c before you buy it. By that I mean look the donor vehicle over and if it looks beat to death continue your search, if it looks good then check out the t/c. I like the Pick and Pull yards in my area because you can find several units to select from almost all the time and pick the best of the lot. If you pick a lemon you take it back and get another one. The prices are exceptionally low and the warranty is as good or better than you will get anywhere.
I have read that can be done. I have not had to do that so my answer is hearsay. If the problem is the motor it's not very expensive at the parts stores.

It depends on what's wrong. It could be something as simple as a snapped pin. If you remove the shift motor and can manually shift the TC out of low, then the TC is fine and you just need a new shift motor.
Pulled the shift motor and it turns every time the switch is turned, guess its definately the TC, unless there is anything else I am overlooking. Guess Ill call some salvage yards tomorrow, closest one to me is about 60 miles away....hard to get to and work a full time job.
Take a look in the classifieds here, there's almost always someone parting one out. I have one for 2WD-4WD from a '98 Expedition. I don't know if those will operate correctly in the later trucks. I've been hoping to find out here when someone else does the swap. Then I'd put it in my Navigator. There is always Craigs List, a good source for parts.
Pulled the shift motor and it turns every time the switch is turned, guess its definitely the TC, unless there is anything else I am overlooking.
You're overlooking the fact that there is no load on the motor. Did you try manually turning the TC where the shift motor bolts up to see if you can get it out of low?
Sounds like the problem I had back in December. Mine ended up being magnetic clutch packs. It was caused by having brand new tires on the front and 75 percent tires on back. Had to drop coin on new tires AND the TC repair. But the TC total repair cost was only $245. I say crack into yours and find out what you are dealing with.
I am thinking about doing the 4406 transfer, will this stop all the problems with locking in with the different tread depth tires??
Or are there any other issues that may occur with the electronics on the vehicle??
