I have 2011 Superduty CC / FX4 with about 29,500 miles...I tow a small trailer everyday, weight of trailer and supplies about 3500 lbs. I have all of the current flashes...engine / transmission. Today while towing the trailer ....I was going down a steep hill and the transmission would not shift out of 4th gear. The truck has never done this and I go down this hill all the time....towing the trailer...I would reach speed of 75 -80 mph...
I would like to know what yall are thinking......and I never use the decent braking system....
I appreciate the suggestion so far.....BUT.....This was just normal driving...a stock truck..no mods...not using tow mode or cruise....and not having pushed other controls.
I have gone down this steep hill atleast 50+ times towing this work trailer....What happened was unusual ....not normal . The transmission has never acted up....I made a trip to the dealer and talked with the service advisor....keep in mind I had already talked with him....he was going to check with other people at the dealership. I was told the transmission was not acting up....it was designed to perform this way .....when going down a steep hill. This is where I informed the service advisor about all the other time traveling down the steep hill with the work trailer and this transmission issue never happened......I stated this was not normal....I'am going to drop the truck off on Monday...I hope that they will at least look at the TSB 11-7-10 and try to resolve this shifting issue....I'am thinking it transmission soleniods......This could happen again and not correct it self....
I recall reading/hearing somewhere that this truck is so smart that in certain situations, even if we did not initiate the T/H mode, the truck computer has the capability to detect the load, grade, braking requirements, etc., and take control of the drivetrain. I have never had my truck behave as you describe, or assume command. I'm not sure if this fits your situation or not, but it might spark someone's memory who can offer up some other ideas.

Possibly, but why would this only occur this one time down the hill? The transmission doesn't care what sort of terrain you are on unless there is a commanded downshift from you or the PCM to maintain speed. If this were a solenoid issue I'm willing to bet you'd see this problem during other driving conditions.
I don't know...seems weird that it only happened once in the many times you've been down this hill. My first thought was that it's just trying to control speed, but why wouldn't it do this the other times?
This what I like reading..... opinions / views on why this might be happening....I have a hard time understanding....that this is normal for these trucks. I have the truck at the dealership...dropped it off today so they will start working on it Monday. I have almost 30K miles so the fuel filter will be changed and I asked that the transmission be serviced......I hope that they resolve this shifting issue.....

Good thinking, but this won't fix a thing. These trucks are supposed to go 150,000 miles before needing a fluid change. Your fluid isn't worn out, nor is it dirty. I highly recommend not spending your money on this!
I have a tough time believing that with trucks this sophisticated the transmission will do ANYTHING other than it's commanded without setting a trouble code. If something is wrong I'm willing to bet that they'll see a trouble code stored in the PCM or TCM.

Please let us know what they find!
The transmission shifting issue is something thats unexpected....This happend all by it self....This truck being so sophisticated....did it all by it self....I purchased this sophisticated Superduty 12-15-2010...and had to take it back in May of 2011 for a sophisticated transmission reflash. I have stated in my postings...what happend and again it happend all by itself....This is my work truck...I take very good care of it...and it's not my first Superduty....even though on the 2011 Superduties we are not to have the transmission serviced for 150K miles....I'am going to have it serviced every 30K miles...I will keep everyone posted on how the dealership resolves the shifting issue.....
I never meant to imply that you didn't have experience with these trucks or that unexpected things can't happen. My point was that there is probably a code present for your issue and that changing theme fluid won't fix it. Nothing wrong with changing it early...
Picked up the truck today from the dealership.......They could not recreate the transmission issue. Nothing....no codes ...no soft codes....nothing.....I will at this time keep driving my truck and towing my small trailer. I just hope it does not happen again..and if it does...I hope it does not become serious....and leave me out of town trying to get the work trailer back to the shop.....
