Question new crate motors

Any of you guys heard about the new crate motors being put out by GM and Ford? What do you think about them? The GM motor is a 496ci 525hp 560 lb-ft motor that will run on 87 octane gas. That sounds pretty impressive to me. It is supposed to be based on a marine engine, and is fuel injected. The Ford motor is a 5.0 based on the 4.6 and pumps out 425-430hp at 6,700rpm and 370 lb-ft at 4,000rpm with 11:1 compression. Sounds decent too, but the GM unit gets it power at lower revs, and lower compression/ Wouldn't you have to run fairly high octane fuel in the Blue Oval?

So...gearheads.

Why is it nobody has come to this thread and refuted this claim about these engines.

A nameless *Enquiring mind* wants to know!

This is comparing apples to oranges. That GM unit sounds nice but at the same time is almost 200 cubic inches bigger. I would hope that the power curve would be lower.

I don't know - I don't see what the big deal is in comparing a "big block" to a "small block". One may have more power, but doesn't the added weight slow it down enough to make them close to even.

My 455 pushing out 450HP and 500+FtLbs begs to differ, since it barely weighs any more than a 350.
Depends on which motor you're talking about.. Usually, the weight difference is easily overcome, due to the difference in horsepower. Remember the old addage, "There's no replacement for displacement."

Of course, turbos and all that can be argued, but that's not really the point of this one...

The reason big blocks are generally able to make more power inch for inch is the fact that the bores tend to be bigger along with the valves and ports.

I don't mean to be comparing the two engines power differences. The power difference is clear, but more along the lines of practicality. Gas prices are going up, and higher octane fuel is a fair amount more expiencive than the 87 octane stuff you can put into the GM mill. So if I were just buying an engine to drop into a truck, or anything, and I had to choose between that GM engine and the Ford, I would probably take the GM unit. You don't have to twist the engine as much to get the hp or tq, and it runs on cheaper gas. The Ford engine, unless it gets way better fuel mileage, is going to have more running cost because of the gas. And hey, if you can't afford to fill up the tank, why have the high hp motor, it just sits there. I think that the two new engines are a good example of possibly different marketing strategies. We have a 5.0, against a moster of engine from GM. You can't possibly tell me these two engines are trying to reach the same group of people. Anyway, just curious about what you guys think about it.

HEHE... fuel mileage should not be considered at all when looking at these motors. Why bother? The Ford will easily get better mileage than the GM due to its size - more than likely enough to make up for the difference in gas price. However, it is not designed at all as a truck motor. It begs to be installed in a Mustang and used at the dragstrip where it can rev to its hearts content. The GM motor could be either truck or car due to its size.
