Hey guys, my old truck is a little hard to start spmetimes, she'll start and then about die 3-5 seconds later, sometimes on the second time it will stay running or on bad says it's the third. Once running it's fine. Of course the off idle response is sometimes sluggish and needs a quick rev to get going.
Hoping it may just be the choke and not need a carb rebuild
I also need to fix the door-interior light switch but that's pretty easy, right?
Remove the air cleaner and see what position the choke butterfly is at, then pump the gas once and see how it changes.
When you pump the gas it should set the choke, which will let the choke butterfly close the rest of the way and it will put the throttle at the fast idle position. You will notice that the little plastic fast idle cam between the choke housing and the carb goes up. You can manually push it back down to take it off the fast idle position. Pushing the throttle again will put it back at the fast idle. When you push it down you should notice the throttle close a small amount.
You also want to make sure the choke opens fully when the engine warms up.
But if it doesn't; one of things the Mustang guys do to these carbs for off-idle hesitation is install a larger accelerator pump discharge nozzle. Stock is #28, a good replacement is #31.
