Nice..... But.. you should avoid ever pulling someone or something out while your in reverse. pinion gears are not as strong on the back side and are not meant to haul/pull that kind of weight. Pinions will strip teeth off faster than you would think.
Food for future thought....
IMHO: In general, yes, gears are stronger in forward. But other than the smaller pinion on the early build '99 Dana 50's, these are BEEFY and I haven't heard of anyone breaking one in reverse (well, except with massively abusive shock loads). Keep the brain engaged and proceed. Roll on power like he did, and don't let tires spin and hop and these gears should handle it just fine.
here is a little background on the situation. and I do understand the forces involved on a R&P, just put a '79 F350 dana 60 & '93 sterling 10.25 in my jeep with 5.13's. it was a risk.
He was going to pull it with a grand cherokee, he was panicked about blocking the road, blind corner on the other side. I know jeeps very well, build them from the ground up as a hobby... he was going to break something.
I told him I would give him one shot. put it in low but never engaged the hubs. if my tires spun or hopped I was going to stop. only had it 2 days when I did that. I was mildly nervous.
you won't find me beating on my new Daily Driver. but out here in the country if you can help, you do help...or at least try.
got the chain tight before he was in his truck so it wouldn't snap.... I did tell my wife to make sure she got it all on tape!
he offered me cash for the pull. I told him nope just next time you can help someone, do it. he called me a "gentleman", he doesn't know me that well...ha!
