thanx for the reply on the cam chain question, does the 4.6 have any problematic areas/chronic items to be aware of? my previous experience was with the 5.0 and the 4.9 ,both of which i found to be excellent long term powerplants[especially the 4.9, 300000plus in my92 econoline] any posters have vehichles with 4.6 and hi miles?
I think about the most chronic problem with the engine would be leaking head gaskets and misfires. The head gaskets have been changed up. You'll find posts on them in here if you do a search.
Misfires caused by bad plugs, wires and coils are fairly common too but you have to remember that on here we see mainly the problem vehicles. For every problem on here there are many, many trucks the same with no problems.
I wouldn't hesitate to own either a 4.6 or 5.4.
I bought my 4.6 v8 new in 97 and the engine has been perfect with no issues at all and with 150k miles that's awsome. I wish I could say that about the transmission and transfercase assy.
Be sure you have a BALANCED drive shaft or you will be replacing your drive train.
