What transmission does it have? Do you have a "K" in the tranny code on the door jamb? And shifting hard can be a good thing. Smooth shifts mean slipping clutches, which are the way most all stock auto trannies are programmed from the factory, but it does shorten their life.

T is the code for an AOD transmission. I had one in my truck until recently but I swapped it for a C6.
The tighter the TV adjustment is, the harder they will shift, but it may also have had a shift kit installed.
Mine didn't shift particularly hard from 1-2-3, but it did clunk into OD a bit - I think they all do - when OD engages, it doesn't drive through the torque converter.
In a newly bought truck with an AOD, I would take it & have the TV set properly with pressure gauges etc. - mine didn't give me a lot of trouble, but many do when in a truck & the TV adjustment is a big part of that.
