Engine coolant tempature sensor. Weird readings

I'm testing my ects andf i'm suppose to get a reading of 5v and somehow i'm getting a reading of 15.8v? Can anyone explain how it's reading more volts then the battery itself??

If you are actually testing the ECT, it would present itself in OHM's. If you have disconnect the pigtail from the sensor and are backprobing the pigtail, perhaps and BIG "IF" here, your 5vt line is overloaded. I would suspect that if you are get 15.8vt, there would be other problems with various sensor's that use the 5vt line as Ref. voltage.

What lead you to test the Sensor? Could you give a bit more info about the vehicle in question and/or problems you are having? That will help us give you a better diagnosis.

And Welcome to FTE!
