trans temp gauge wire
I'm planning my assault of the new e350 and will be adding a trans temp guage. A friend of mine with a 96 F250 did the job a couple of years ago and said there was a sensor wire somewhere already, same trans, e40d. Any ideas on where? Wire color, etc? I'm hoping this install doesn't install tapping the pan but that's what i figured i might have to do.

Don't tap into the trans temp sensor wire. Your gauge won't read it properly and it will cause problems with the transmission.
There is a port on the driver's side of the transmission for the sensor. There is a black hex head plug in the port. It is the same thread as almost every temp sensor.
