Now What do I do

Alright guys get ready for a lot of information. I've got a 2000 f250 psd xlt. 177,000 miles I have had this truck for about 2 months. Everything has been great till last weekend while hauling my jetski back home for the weekend the truck all of a sudden started running like crap. it blew a big puff of white smoke struggled for a couple of miles then died on a pretty steep hill, and would not start back. I got it towed home, b/c a costly repair is the last thing my budget needs right now. (This is not my daily driver) Anyway when I got home it would start but just ran like crap, no power at all. Yesterday it would not start at all. It billowed thick white smoke out of the exhaust, I needed to move it while I was mowing. So today after doing some research I changed out the cam position sensor. Hoping that would fix all of my problems. Nope. It did start though and I was able to move it to finish mowing. Anyway it starts right up, it chugs and runs really rough for a few seconds then kinda smooths out. You can mash the gas while in park and it will climb to about 2500 and thats it, it builds rpm's very sparatically. While pushing the gas a good bit of white bluish smoke comes out. when you let off the gas it goes back down very fast almost dies chugs for a few seconds then smooths out again. Within the last 1000 miles I've had fuel filter air filter and oil change. Oil still looks good. I am sure you guys have some ideas for me. Thanks for the help in advance.

White "smoke" usually means water in the combustion chamber, likely a blown head gasket. Are you low on coolant? Any signs of oil in the coolant?

James let's start by asking John or Art if they will move this thread over to the 99 to 03 psd forum asthats where we will brt you the most help! The second thing is going to be a quick check of the UVCH (under valve cover harness) connectors they are right on the top of each side valve cover, if they are good and seated we will move on is your oil level full? The injection system will run with low power smoke like hell stall, runn rough, ect if your oil is more than 6 quarts low, did you get any check engine light? After these things are checked we'll have some more things for you but you're gonna need to get out your tool kit!

Oil level is good, no check engine lights. I think the fuel I have is good. I filled up on saturday and drove about 160 miles before I had a problem and like I said fuel filter is less than a month old. I'll try to check the uvh tonight any instructions on how to do that, or what exactly I'm looking for. I'm starting to wonder if buying my first diesel was a mistake.

Sorry about putting this in the wrong forum. Should I start a new one in the 99-03 diesel forum or will this one move over there for me. I'm still not seeing it over there. Thanks

No problem at all. Got it there now. Thought I'd moved it but a little SNAFU got things turned around. You're good to go now and are in the correct forum.

Sounds like a injector cup or O ring issue. The white smoke sounds like fuel, raw fuel...

Check the UVC harnesses like the others have said, but an unplugged harness would not cause smoke like you mention.

Turbo issues would not cause a rough running issue, unless the compressor side is just pouring oil into the intercooler.

Ok now you've got the basics done, don't get discouraged we have all been through a problem like this before and you have picked the best forum to find help, since you are not seeing a ck engine light I'm also leaning tword a blown o ring on an injector, what you're going to want to do is pull off you're valve covers, this will allow you to inspect the UVCH as well as get a look at you're injectors and watch them for oil injection pulse discharge, and also look for any leaks around the bases, and you will want to check torque while you're in there!

How do u check the injectors. I would think you couldn't run the truck with the valve covers off.

It will run just fine with the valve covers off... park with the nose down hill if you can, if not oil will run out the back of the valve train...

Here is a leaking injector I had a few years ago...

Another one... You can see the drivers side valve cover is off...

James:

If you would...update your profile so people know where you are located. There might be someone who can come lend a hand, wrench, knowledge, etc. I know that I was pointed to FTE from another well-known PSD site, simply for the fact that the user was a member of both and said someone here would help. I got the best I could hope for (Mueckster), and he saved my bacon.

Also...don't get discouraged...you didn't make a mistake buying a 7.3L PSD. I can honestly say I love my 2000 truck more today than the day I drove it off the lot new. That's saying something!

Any updates on your problem?
