I am helping a lady friend look for a small/midsize suv,and since I haven't been in the suv market since I had my 1992 cherokee several years ago,I am out of the loop. Here are her requirements: probably 4 years old to fit in her budget,as good as gas mileage as possible for an suv,3rd row seating, very reliable(she will be hauling 3 kids and sometimes more). She isn't brand loyal,so it can be chevy, dodge, ford, toyota, kia, whatever. thanks for any ideas.

Get her a diesel excursion. Nothing says safety like wrapping 9200lbs of steel around her. I recommend the quad captains chairs, you still have comfortable seating for 7, and the 2nd row captains are very comfortable. I get 20mpg on the highway in my diesel excursion, yet i can also haul 73 kids if i pack 'em in right.
I got into an accident with a 1998 Volvo V70 station wagon a couple weeks back. the wagon was totaled from a side impact collision when he merged into my lane. I had some of his paint on my front tire. Any other vehicle and both very well may have had to be towed, but I drove away after destroying the passenger side of his car.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can get a flame-thrower attachment as a dealer installed option.
