just interested in what fter's think is the best diesel engine. theres probably going to be bias opinions but thats ok. like i said just interested in what you think about it. dodge (cummins), ford (powerstroke), gm (duramax). also if there are upgrades to make'um run better and more efficient if its available.
i think cummins' will run the longest but as far as reliability i think the 7.3 and cummins are about neck and neck...as far as duramax i think they are over rated imho esp love pointing out to chevy guys that its actally made by izuzu! lol
HAHA the izzy engine yea I love when a duramaxx chebby rolls up thinking hes hot stuff and i just go "nice rebadged izuzu" it makes them go WTF?! and they get all huffy saying things like its a chevy truck. personially i think the cummins and PSD are the better ones cummins tends to win the top three but hey each has its good and its bad so its really ford and cummins for me baby!! (i plan to try and drop a cumins in the truck if i can one day)
international 7.3 V8, followed by the international inline 6 cylinder engines.
you can keep your cummaparts.
cummaparts? that what the "other guys" are callin em these days? they hardly "cummapart". in fact, they still are, and always have been, the stoutest bottom ends available in pickups.
aside from the newest motors (all have virtually identical injection systems), cummins has always been the most powerful/capable of its era. 7.3's are bout as reliable as can be, but more of a pain to start in the winter and have a low"er" power ceiling. plus, upgraded hpop fired injection parts get very expensive, very quick.
if youre doin a swap, p-pump'd cummins is bout the most viable option there is.
everyone has their own opinions. i have never seen a cummins engine under 350 hp that was worth it's weight in scrap metal. especially the over 25 different 5.9 turd engines i have had the misfortune to have to drive.
and i have been driving for over 40 years.
im only saying cummins as were originally talkin about the "big" three, if we want to throw international in the mix then i would go international, PSD, cummins (cumaparts), and gassers...sorry duramax, im alergic to chebbys and the izzy engine lol!!....
Only American diesel I don't like is the Detroit 6.2, but it's more of a matter of personal preference. I'm a believer in the straight 6 design. The International V8s that came in Ford trucks were good too. I do like the sound of the screamin' 2 stroke detroits though, shame they never came in a light-duty pickup truck

the only diesel pickup engines made by one of the "big three" are the GM 5.7, 6.2, and 6.5 diesels. the duramax is an isuzu diesel engine.
ford has the new 6.7.
the 6.9, 7.3 idi, 7.3 powerstroke, 6.0, and 6.4 were all made by international.
chrysler never made a diesel. they also used a mitsubishi diesel in the late 70's early 80's for pickups, but they went over like a wet fart in church.
The Cummins that was in my 96 I liked much, and much better that the 05 model Cummins...05 the whole truck was cheap to me, even the motor was different, got rid of it, went to older Fords because of the economy, and diesel fuel prices.
For reliable diesel performace cummings is top dog. Its a true 6cyl diesel. Powerstroke and Dmax especially are gas variants. Dmax was originally designed around a 350 block I believe.
