DTC P0088

Engine light came on and ran code scan, code P0088 came up indicating a high pressure fuel injection issue. 2008 with 75k miles. Did a little research and saw where a service bulletin has been issued. Cab off fix Anyone else have this code recently?

Could be a number of things Maybe VCV, low pressure system or the pump itself. Sounds like you maybe headed for a cab off.

Best to take it in for proper dianosis

Did you get loud injection events at all prior?

Anything different at all?

Senix - No update yet, wound up getting a kidney stone and have not had truck to dealer yet, hope to get it in shop this coming week.

Parkland - I did hear some loud noise, sounded like a fan growling if that makes sense.

Well just to state the obvious:

P0088 = Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High

Both the PCV and VCV are integral parts of the HPFP; there is no servicing either one of them. I'm willing to be either one of these are your problem. Attached is an image of your HPFP and each of these valves...note the part where it says they can't be replaced.

Now I'm no tech, but from what I gather you need a new HPFP. With any luck the damage is confined to these valves and didn't end up munching up parts and sending them to your injectors. Good luck, and please let us know how it turns out!

When we get this code in the dealership, we check low fuel pressure to motor, pull secondary fuel filter inspect inside housing, and if metal shavings are found, we pull valve covers, inverse the front injector on either side, and see if metal contaminants are found. Get approval to pull cab, remove hpfp cover inspect cover harness and electrical plug-ins to pump, replace pump and necessary parts..

Jessef250, and what is the typical cause of this type of failure?

Is this where you are also looking for evidence of water contamination? or does that cause a different failure?

Just trying to understand.

Bob

An additional possibility would be a bad fuel pressure sensor.

Just to throw this out there, (show you how much diagnostics matter), I had one throwing the p0088 code. Looked at the tsb, and ordered a pump. Put it on, and a short time later, it was back with the same code. I took a long test drive with the IDS, and the cruise control quit. I talked to the owner and he admitted it would do that. Think about this one, when it would do it, it would also dim the lights (that was important). In the pcm connector, pin 39 is the FRP (fuel rail pressure) pin 16 (next to 39 but above it) is the generator (13.5 volts). They were shorting together internally when hitting a bump, setting FRP too high, and dimming the lights (13.5 volts going to 5).

Agreed. Connectors are the #1 source of problems for all things electrical and electronic, but without them things are rather unservicable.

The key thing to remember is not to blindly trust that the sensor readings being reported are accurate and to do what you can to independently validate them.
