Stretched seal

Don't mean to be a pest, but this oil cooler operation is all new to me. Here is my latest challenge.
Yesterday, I cleaned parts and reassembled the oil cooler. While I was into it with fairly clean hands I installed the other seals that came with the kit. Today I was putting the oil filter base onto the oil cooler cover and the seals will not stay in place. I thought no problem I will put a thin coat of permatex gasket sealer in the groove. I was wrong..problem...both seals have grown. They will not fit into the groove. Push it in here and it pushes out somewhere else. I have not pulled on or handled them roughly. They appear to have grown overnight.
Has anyone had this happen? What is the solution? What if I cut out a small section and glued it back together??? Thanks for reading and helping me through this.

You should have used engine oil for lube. You need to buy a new "O" ring......a cut will INSURE it leaking!

FWIW...FYI, I did use new engine oil for lube. The gaskets seemed to fit okay when first installed.

do not use permatex on an o-ring. this is bad and can cause an o-ring to not seal. when putting together an oil cooler and having this type of issue I would suggest using a product like transgel wich is made to work with automotive grade o-rings. also vaseline will work.

Update

Cheezit! You da man! I used vaseline this morning to hold the seal in place. Worked like a charm. Thanks again for your help. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to finish putting it all together.
