after replacing almost everything in the ignition system on my 54 f250 i finally got it to run this morning. most of the help came from people on this forum (browsing past threads), without my asking a single question. one thing that was not mentioned in these past posts though was how much different it is to start these older motors campared to todays vehicles. its been a long time since ive had a carbrated vehicle, and it took about 2 hours of head scratching (everything is good, why wont it fire??) to figure out that i needed to pump the H#$% out of the gas pedal to get it to fire (the fuel system was empty but the float bowl bowl was full). i dont know if this will help anyone or not but you never know. i have since primed the fuel system and fixed any leaks there were and it is now starting great, and this is the first time in 20+ years it has ran at all. thanks to all who have answered previous posts on this subject.
sorry no video... wasnt expecting to actually have it start hahaha.
it wasnt a "set the choke" type of pedal pressin (already had the choke on) but more of a frustrated "why wont you start here is more and more gas" type of push
and yes it is very satisfing when you finally get something figured out and i couldnt have been happier. ive been trying to teach my 16 year old son that (just got his first truck) but im not sure that hes buying into it yet. we spent 3 days re-doing the brakes on it and now his only comment is "i hate brakes" hahaha but im sure someday he'll figure it out
I know how you feel. When I traded my fuel injected bike for one with carbs., the first cool morning I almost ran the battery down trying to start it. Then it hit me, cracked the throttle a couple of times and she fired right off. Congrats. of getting it running.
