Navigation Updates

For those of you who may have or are thinking about getting the Sync/Nav factory system in your next truck, map updates through NAVTEQ are EXPENSIVE. $199 to be exact. I have an early 2011 350 (06/10) and found some roads the other day that were not on the database. Did some quick research on how to update the system and ended up at NAVTEQ Maps. My version is 3.0, next version available is 3.1, so not a major update. Not happening for $199. This software also updates the Gracenote CD database as well.

Did some searching on the web for NAVTEQ, and found they update just about every OEM system, and a lot of people complaining about the price, so it's just not Ford. Anyway, heads-up to those who are considering this purchase. It may be cheaper just to stick the Garmin solution. I liked the clean install concept, but now I'm not so sure.

Thank you for the note. I've noticed some variances in the accuracy of my nav system, but it doesn't seem to be unique to the system either - google maps shows some of the same variances (I am working with google now to correct my store location address - it shows being south of town a few miles down the road from where it really is).

I also have a Tomtom Go2535-M Live. It came with Lifetime maps and traffic updates. It is actually pretty slick - I can plug it in to the computer and it automatically goes out and searches for updates. I can also mark the map on the screen and save corrections/problems. Then when the unit is hooked up to the computer it sends out what I marked back to a database. I got this unit before I got my F350 so I would have nav, and I also use it every time I jump in a work truck.

The updates for vehicular systems are pricy. For our Accord they are $145

Map updates which also include Gracenote® updates are usually only released once a year and it is always a good idea to read over the release notes to see what has been updated and if it is even relevant to you and the areas you frequent. For some it may only be worth updating every 2 or 3 years.

Gracenote® updates can also be purchased separate from map updates at a cost of $25. Need to call to order...

You can register at NAVTEQ to be notified of update releases and other promotions. Sometimes they send out coupon codes for things like free shipping or 5% to 20% off your order.

To report errors or potential updates to the NAVTEQ maps you can use the NAVTEQ Map Reporter...

There is a good possibility that if the "new" roads are not 10 years old it most likely will not be on the update anyway.

Most GPS - NAV system updates in the past have been more geared towards all the extras, restaurants, fuel etc.

Not only are updates very expensive, they are also incredibly infrequent and the current map database is truly out-of-date. For a couple of other reasons I ended up throwing out the OEM navigation system on my 2011 Truck and replaced it with a Kenwood DNX9980HD / Garmin / Sirius aftermarket setup from Crutchfield. The PAC SM-FRD1 combined with the PAC SWI-JACK provides integration with SYNC and steering wheel controls. The whole setup works very well and the sound is much improved even with the crappy ford speakers! Needless to say: The Garmin navigation built into the Kenwood is fantastic with an interface/capabilities like (or identical) to the high-end Garmin Nuvi systems. Installation (replacement) is easy and worked very well. Crutchfield business and support are fantastic.
