pulled the trigger on a new(er) van
I bought an 02 E350 XLT club wagon, extended length, 5.4
In a few words, Wow! I love it. Much more solid feeling and driving than the 92 460, but it had 250k and this one has 130k. Everything checked out good on it, one owner, no major repairs, no spark plug issues that i could dig up, no wrecks, no smoke, no leaks. I'm thrilled!
For the few of you who might have followed my posts about steering and suspension problems on the old van, what a difference! This thing steers like a sports car! NO play in the wheel, i couldn't be happier, partly because SHE will finally be happy. SHE may drive it 200 miles to my 20,000 but for some reason that seems to matter. When i've driven 23 hours or had a cold one or two, those few miles she might happily drive make all the difference!
Yes, i would've loved a v-10 or PSD, but this one wasn't far north of 5 grand and it's really clean. I do have a 6500lb Airstream, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere but once or twice a year, i'll just have to tow slowly when i do.
Also, i know some frown upon towing with the extended length vans, but i'm gonna carefully forge ahead. I drive a rig for a living so i'm pretty careful about maintaining and pulling a trailer.
I have plans to make this sort of an SMB (Sportsmobile) homebuild, basically a camper in itself, and i can't wait to get started.
Pics soon, i didn't take one yet. But, it just looks like every other church van on the road, just navy blue and not white!!!
I too follow the Sportsmobile site for homebuilds-----wow what creations arise there huh?!? It was from that site I thought to get an E350 extended body then add a raised roof and extended height doors.
My '00 E250 is getting tired too with the 254K miles--huge difference between it and a '99 E250 I occasionally drive with barely 138K miles. Mine is still solid and tight but something about the lower miles makes a difference.
Sounds like you got a good deal and great price too----hope to see some photos and know you'll enjoy it!
I want to customize it a little, not much, just with junkyard stuff. I can hardly talk on the phone while cruising down the freeway because of all the road noise. My question is..Where is it coming from and how do i insulate it, to reduce it.
Before customizing anything, I was thinking of putting 1/2 or 3/4 OSb on the floor and some type of insulation in the doors and walls before a cheap panel job or maybe swapping out the OEM inside of van at my local friends junkyard.
This is not a show van, but just a place to sleep during fishing trips!
