Arrow HARD TO REMOVE COOLANT FILTER

A while back there was some discussion about having a difficult time removing the coolant filters from the filter holder. Just had a thought and wonder if anyone has tried using a spritz of Fluid Film on the filter seal? Or would it hurt the seal in any way?

Will be time to replace mine in about a month so I've been thinking about it.

I had the same problem so I ran a finger covered in engine oil around the mating surface of the rubber gasket and haven't had a problem since.

Site said their prices were going up to $24.99 due to the high price of the plutonium used in the lube.

Good ol' motor oil here... you lube a coolant filter gasket just like you should be doing for a spin on oil filter.

Of course, this will now open up the debate if one should use synthetic or dino oil to lubrciate their coolant filter gasket!!!!

BTW, I use Rotella-Syn 5W-40 (because that is what I use in my truck)... but of course any oil will do!!!

I lube the gasket really well and try to leave it very wet... then screw the filter on by hand to ensure that I do not cross-thread the threads of the filter... then use my strap wrench to tighten. Have never had an issue in removing after X-many years and 150,000 miles of changing filters.

I have only ever used Baldwin filters and have just recently tried the WIX filter. Wonder if the "issues" people are having are with certain brand(s) of filters (unless they are forgetting to lube the gasket)???

Well, since we know that the 6.0 will shear dino oil down very quickly, my vote is synthetic.

Since we shouldn't go here either, ATF should only go in the tranny.

What is the correct torque value of a Baldwin coolant filter?

I say "snug" foot pounds.

And no, I haven't used "Fluid Film"

There, I got back to the thread question.

I've actually always just wiped a little coolant on my gasket, since it's always readily available at the time, and I've never had any trouble getting them off. I think just about anything slightly slippery will work.

Coolant didn't work on mine..... had to remove it and stick it in a big vise and use a strap wrench......

Fluid film- a spray lube with silicone?

I used Motorcraft dino BTW. so that's what the coolant filter got. Thinking of T6 for oil change tomorrow hope it's compatable with my coolant filter gasket! <--grin
