Skid Plates

Hey guys, what do you think of the idea of me throwing skid plates underneath my 84, I was thinking last night and when I put the newer heavy duty front bumper on, I want to provide the axle, driveshaft and whatnot with good protection when i am bumping about on the farm(lot of potholes you dotn see and rocks and whatnot)

Is this practical or just plain retarded?

Depends how big your potholes are... I'd be more concerned about puncturing a gas tank than harming your axle on a rock. A pinion guard would protect the lower end of the driveshaft, the rest should be high enough unless you hit something. I know at least some of the 4x4's came stock with skid plates under the transfer case and front gas tank. The rear tank could have them as well, but if you keep the spare there, it pretty much does the same job.

My spare goes in the bed of the truck along the right side...Classic looking(I like that better than the under-the-bed look. I know your right about the skid plates on the fuel tank, and t-case, but I would like to protect my axle it being the D44 haha. And I think I might just do it and fab it, it might make for less wind drag for better MPG's????

I took my t-case skid plate off because greasing the u-joints was a PITA, just remember you have to service what those plates cover up.

We have a belly pan on our allis HD5 dozer. That things a pain in the *** to take on and off to change oil and do other service things, but i cant imagine how many things would have got ripped off if it wasnt there. The only thing about it is it doesnt have any drain holes, so stuff tends to collect inside it. I wouldnt hesitate to throw some on there, jus dont be underneath it when you take it off or else everything on top of it will fall on your face. Learned that the hard way LOL
