I always thought it would be really amusing if a gps, every now and then got an attitude. that or when you missed the turn it would say colder... colder...colder
I have a Garmin Nuvi, Garmin GPSMap 162 (old but works great) Delorme PN-40, and another brand in the boat that is going to be used as an anchor just as soon as I get up the money to replace it. I love the Garmins for vehicle nav. The Nuvi does seem to have an attitude.....especially about the 2nd or 3rd time she says "recalculating". (I'm not sure which is more entertaining - the Nuvi voice or my wife's response) The Delorme goes with me anytime I'm on foot and often in the truck. I can download sat pics, Military style quadrangles, color aireal and b & w photo's to it.
Just remember that in December when it routes you over that Forest Service Road over the top of the mountain, you may want it to "recalculate"!
thats when my garmin rino 530 hcx and delorme topo maps shine! bring on the adventure! woo-hoo colorado!
Know the feeling. Got the Coast Range on one side of me and the Cascades on the other. With the PN-40 my Delorme Topo USA downloads onto the GPS and goes right along with me. Easy lap top connect too!
the kids bought me mine for christmas 5 years ago. i think i have used it 3 times so far.
i only use it when i go som place i don't know. and since i almost always know where i am going, dad uses it, and if i need it i borrow it from him..
I have the Tom Tom with lifetime no charge map updates and traffic updates. About $100. delivered. Works great, much better than I had ever imagined. I named her "Ruth", for my dear departed MIL who always tried to tell me where to go. Seriously, I talk about her but I loved her.
I have a Magellion and have yet to be side tracked or lost. It's done it's job.
Get the Garmin, it's better overall and easier to use.
In a previous life time I used to teach land navigation and I would have to agree with Tim. My dad decided to buy a handheld for "backup" when they were up in the mountains riding horses. He didn't listen to son and bought a Magellion because it was on sale. Now don't get me wrong, his Magellion is a good unit but, the menu's and features are much more difficult to work with than the Garmin or Delorme. I've tried teaching him how to use it numerous times and he ends up just shaking his head. He has essentially just given up on it and it sits in its box. (He's 86)
One also has to decide what they want to use the GPS for. For hiking, fishing, hunting and "off the beaten path" use, something like one of the Garmin handhelds or the Delorme PN Series would be my choice. I had a Garmin handheld and when I replaced it I went with Delorme because I could put the airial overlays on it and map updates are cheaper. The Garmin Rhino has some neat features as well.
If it is going to be for use just in the car/truck road navigation something like the Garmin Nuvi can't be beat. If you are going to use it in a boat or "wet" enviornment, you don't want the Nuvi - they are not for marine use or use where there is a possibility that they may get a little water on them. The various models of Nuvi's come with different enticements. Some come with free map updates for life, some come with free traffic updates and some come with niether or both. Lots of info on the respective web sites.
I guess I should mention that when i mentioned delorme, I was actually referring to paper topo maps. I'm proud to say that I am 24 and proficient with them.

Never leave home without them when exploring a new area. And I keep the outdated ones too! One might be amazed to see what is on some of the old maps that aren't on the newer ones!
I just came home with the nuvi 1350 LMT. Now I have to figure it out. Thanks for feed back
Congrats on the Nuvi. 1350 is a good unit and you will get the map and traffic updates. They are pretty good about knowing what speed zone you are in but a tattle tale when you go over by just 1 mph!
