We just installed the BW turnover ball. (thanks Epic) And after the we went to install the Ford OEM 5th wheel wiring harness that was supposed to be plug and play. 720JD said he has done this to two other trucks and the plugs were right there. Can others check for the two plugs, please?
Also, if I do not have the plugs, can I replace a wiring harness in that area to get the plugs going? Thanks!
I didn't use the Ford OEM harness but used a Pollack harness from etrailer.com. The Pollack harness has an end for the in-bed plug and the other end has 2 plugs. I took the 2 bolts out of the bumper mounted plug, (makes it easier to unplug connector)then unpluged the connector there. 1 of the Pollack ends "replaces" the connector you just unplugged, and the other plugs in to the factory plug that you removed (this feeds the original plug and on up to the new end in your bed) I hope that makes sense?
Man I really don't understand this. My wiring harness lies on top of the left frame rail and approximately where the spare tire sits closest to the frame the 2 plugs were hanging there along the top of the frame. I need to take a picture of the location.
The dummy ends on the plugs make them look weird. They each have 3 or 4 holes in them with funny looking rubber plugs in the holes. At first I thought there was no way my harness would plug into them, but then I realized that they were actual caps on the factory plug and you removed them just like taking the harness plugs apart.
I honestly don't know why these would be on some trucks and not others. There is nothing special about my truck i.e. no camper package, no fifth wheel prep, no snowplow package that would be cause for me to have them. My brother's truck is nearly identical except he has the snowplow package on his truck.
I am also very baffled how anybody is getting the aftermarket Pollard plug to work in their bed. That is what I originally bought and no matter what I did or where I put it, there was not enough clearance behind the bed wall for it to fit. I contemplated using a spacer and at that point realized that the Ford plug was cheaper than what I had paid for the Pollack and already had the needed spacer in a much more attractive package than I could have ever come up with.
You know, I never looked for the dummy plugs you're talking about because I had used this Pollack harness on my 06 and just did it like I had done on that truck. I know what you mean about the clearance issues. I put my plug in the left rear pillar facing towards the front of the truck. I had already put my plug for my 5th Wheel rear camera there, so it works for me. Sounds like I should have went with the Ford harness...
I know what your talking about on the plug caps. I have saw them before, but this truck for sure does not have these plugs. I dropped the spare and check all up and down the rail, as well as up in the bed. I plan on using the pollak aftermarket T harness with the ford spacer I already have. That should work.
I wonder what makes some trucks have the plugs and others don't? Is yours a 350 720JD?
Mine is F350. I can probably make you a deal on the Pollack harness if you are interested. I've been meaning to put it on ebay, but I really hate selling stuff on there.
I also can't find an extra plug.
I follow from the 7 pin plug on the bumper hitch but the bundle of wires disappear to the front of the truck along the left frame rail.
I took a picture except I can't find my super proprietary Olympus USB camera tether cable either...

Exactly what I did. I could not find a thing. But did you notice there is a blunt cut wire on one of the harnesses? Its a blue color. It reminds me of the upfitter wires that have the black coating on them.
720, I ordered a pollak harness about an hour ago and just got a shipping email. Sorry. I know about ebay. I hate it too.
This must be a 250 vs. 350 thing, but I can't understand why it would be. It seems like it would be more challenging for the factory to add the 5th wheel prep package if there are separate harnesses on these trucks.

I was thinking the same thing.... Maybe others with the 350 vs. the 250 can check. But it does seem odd to offer it on one and not the other.
Or maybe short bed vs 8ft bed?
With the early 2011 models, you could only get 5th wheel prep on the 8 ft so maybe they include the wiring on the 8 ft even if you don't get the factory 5th wheel prep package.
