"64 tranny upgrade?

Can anyone give me some info about changing transmissions in my '64? I have a 292 3spd and would really like to put in a 4 or even 5 spd. I have seen a lot of 4 spds that look like they might fit the bell housing. I'm sure I would at least have to change the clutch disc and pilot bushing, but I am most worried about the centerline of the shaft being the same as the old 3 spd. I think the sychronizers are gone in the one I have and before I spend a lot of money to rebuild this one I would rather put that into a better tranny. Please Feel free to e-mail me at ckline24(No Email Addresses In Posts!).
Thanks.

You may already know this and I'm not sure what you're aiming for in a tranny swap but I can tell you that any original type tranny you might swap in will have the same basic top gear ratio. In other words if your goal is to reduce highway RPMs, changing to an original style 4 spd won't do it. You would of course get a "granny" gear that's quite a bit lower than the first gear in your three speed. If that's your desire then you could accomplish that. I have a 61 with a three speed and I've done a lot of research on the question. Ideally we could adapt an AOD to our old 223s or 292s but I have never heard of anyone successfully doing that. Don't mean to be negative but that's what I know.

Well, I thought that I might get a 4 speed overdrive out of a late model mustang that would possibly reduce the highway RPM's but I just want to get rid of the column shift, and get a floor shift. I know I can get a three speed floor shifter almost anywhere, but the 1st gear synchro being bad is still a problem.

I totally agree with you about the benefits of a late model four speed automatic transmission like the AOD. I think overdrive is the only way to get a final drive ratio less that 1 to 1. But again the problem is adapting the engine to the older engine. I just don't know how you'd do it. I think that's why you rarely see someone just swapping the transmission in trucks this old - it's almost always the engine and trans. The Ford AOD will bolt up to several later model V8s and I think the 300 six which is another option for you. Of course a lot of guys also use the widely available V8 and overdrive 4sp automatic from the "other" guys. Most Ford purists understandably frown on doing that but it is an option and it's up to you what you decide to do.

Actually i have been talking about a manual Trans the whole time. I have been told that there were some overdrive manual transmissions that came in the mustangs. I was just wondering of these would even fit the bellhousing that came with the 292. I could easily go out to any of the local bone yards and rob a tranny and shifter out of a mustang for a whole lot less than getting this old three speed rebuilt.

I have a 63 F100 (not uni). I put a 57 292 in it. I currently have it at the transmission shop and the guy is putting a aod auto in it. Looking around I found out that the aod is not supposed to fit because the starter ends up where one of the bell housing mounting ears is. The guy at the trans shop says he is gettting around this by putting the V8 aod guts in a 6 cylinder aod case. He is using a adpater plate as well. He said I could drive the truck home this coming weekend. I will pass along info as I get it. I have the few page sales brochure for the 63 truck somewhere. I remeber it mentioning that I think new for 63 was 2nd and 3rd gear syncro in the trans. These old three speeds might not have had sycro in all the gears. Mine sure acts like it does not.

first gear syncro? I don't know about yours but my 3-speed is solid running, but you better be stopped before shifting back into 1st. I'm pretty sure the 3-speeds did not have a syncro on first.

I believe that three speed/ overdrive trans were a popular enough option for the whole family of Ford vehicles with the Y-block, that you should be able to find one. Look on eBay, for example, you would want the heavier duty model for trucks I would think, R-11 code comes to mind but not sure. Or if you have the bucks, you can buy an adapter and use a Mustang 5 speed T-5, look for the heavy duty ones, so called world class and T-5 V, I believe. Or hunt around for an old farm truck auxillery trans, like a Brownig, "brownie" box. Good luck.
