Tach sensor?

Hey guys, I have an 89 f250 with the 7.3 Diesel. My problem is this, whenever I start the truck, the tach does not work. also, the truck drives in 2nd or 3rd gear when in drive. I was told that this was a tach sensor problem by the local tranny shop. I searched around, and i think i know where it is. Does it run off of the injector pump gear? Has a big nut with 2 black leads? If so, please let me know because it is annoying to have to shift this thing manually. Thanks!

sorry almost forgot to also tell you to check the throttle position senser as it sends signal to trans via the computer. It works like an electronic kickdown cable.

this is really bugging me now. i replaced the sensor, and it is still messed up. any ideas? i will check the tps now, thanks

You may want to get a second opinion from another trans shop also before spending additional funds

well i checked the tps, and there is no busted wires or anything. Yeah the tranny shop is one of the best in this area, i also talked to somebody from international and from the local dealer, and they all thought that was probably the problem. guess not.

To properly test the tps sensor you need an ohm meter,with the sensor unpluged, put the leads of the meter across 2 of the three open pins , then slowly raise the throttle and watch the ohms you should see a gradual but steady increase at the meter. Not sure which pins but with only three you should find them easily

Tach sensor?

The tach gets its reading from the transducer on the tower for the injection pump mount. SOMETIMES (sometimes) that transducer gets junk on the end of it and this messes up the readings. Unplug it from the harness and remove it from the tower, check it out. (carefully look over the way the probe is inserted into the tower. The jamb nut may be holding the proper position for the probe. If it is, insert the probe into the tower, turn it by hand til it stops - hits the pump drive gear - and back it out slightly) tighten the jamb nut if it is so equipped.
I also read somewhere, that the wiring harness gets pinched and this will also mess up the tach readings.
