Gah! I'm pulling my hair out over this. ANY suggestions greatly appreciated.
1976 Ford E-250, 351W, AT.
Runs/idle fairly well when cool, but as soon as it starts to warm up my power drops to nothing. Barely get it up to 30mph without horrible valve clatter, total power loss. The hotter the engine gets, the worse it performs.
I've had the engine checked and it is in good condition for it's age, no blown gaskets or leaks. It's far from perfect, but it's condition is solid. Solid enough to be running better than it is.
I've checked just about everything. Replaced ignition module, coil, plugs, wires, dist. pickup unit, fuel filter. Timing & idle are set correctly. I'm at a loss.
Only thing that I have not looked into is the carberator, but it doesn't seem that an out-of-tune carb would behave this way. I could be wrong.
How does the thermostat check out ? when in doubt throw it out besisdes they are cheep . you may want to buy a rebuild kit for the carb and rebuild it anyway .Ir sound like to mee the engine is overheating .I would also flush the coolng system while the t-stat is changed out .
